First hardware drum machine? The MFB 503. I mainly use it's kicks and hi-hats.
Then I got the ESX-1. Not really a drum machine I know, but that's how I use it.
This year I got the Tempest. I don't think I'll be needing anymore drum machines for a while.

The r8 was the one i was thinking of when i wrote the comment.Ive mentioned in other threads(s) that i cant reproduce the timbre(not the sequence particular)in another programme.Has its own shine and presence. But as you say the sequencer will affect it.Anyway...glad you dont need to stockpile the boxes to keep the vibe

edit-work at it is not in the equation : ]

Started out with a TR-606, which I hated at the time, both soundwise and programming wise. When I listen back to songs of that time they have some nice retro sound. From TR-606 to 707, which I already like better at the time. Then the Alesis HR16 en HR16B and finally Roland R8M. That was really a great machine, very rich and full sound. After that I used drum sounds from workstations like Ensoniq TS12 and Korg Triton before going ITB with Ultrabeat, Battery, Kontakt etc.

Well, the R-8 was unique in that it had 2 samples for (almost) for every sound. The feel templates sometimes shifted the balance between the layers that made the "whole" sound in realtime. But it can be emulated on any sequencer if you have all the layers to begin with.

Working with a real drummer was what made me realize this. A real drummer (seasoned) will kick the crap out of an R-8 when it comes to "feel".

Id love to hear some r8 sounds reproduced on your sequencer. The reason i say this is i can hear the r8 from a huge distance due to the fact ive owned a few and actually learned to programme on one for a few years 1996 onwards.Got a mk2 sitting hear right now and it sounds just like it always did........like an R8
