Mine was the Dr-5 I spent my whole check gettin it now that's love, and it was my starting point. I puthat machine through the wringer, and it kept bouncin back.
I've since passed it on to my nephew but it brings back memories
Man ya'll used to actually like those Yamaha machines? I hated them. Alot of cats used to like the alesis machines. I didn't care for those either, but I did think about getting a Korg DDD-1 Many Many moons ago
I know, I know.. You have to tweak the hell out of the effects to get something usable. I like the lay out of their sequencer, as far as layering a 16 bar loop with a 4 or 8 bar loop. I perfer the mpc sequencer, it's more flexible, as far as hardware samplers. Plus I can make tracks on the fly, compared to the RM1 x. All and all, I learned more about effects, and how to tweak'em, in the long run. Made it easy to breeze through the mpc 4000. As far as price, I got two of them for $150 each. I gave one to my cousin, and the other to a friend of mine. Nice little starter machine.

It's cool when you can pass gear on.
I gave my MPC60II to my cousin.
His house flooded in Hurricane Katrina, now he wants to use his insurance money to buy my MPC2kxl. I guess REFUNDING my 60 doesn't occur to him.
Alesis SR-16 is the only actuall drum machine I've owned. I used it for it's sequencer midi-ed to several samplers and synths. Now all PC, still own it though and it works 15 years later.
Although it's not really a machine I had to reply to this one.
I started out on "digital drum systems" which was an cartridge for the commodore 64 and it was able of playing sampled drums (1sec sample time, up to 8 sounds) Of course it sounded like kids stuff, but then again I was a kid way back then....
Yeah man... I had that (on a floppy) and used it. I was so proud when I soldered a cable together to make a "direct audio out" from the C-64 to my tape deck. Yeah baby.
My first hardware drum machine was a Yamaha RX-17. I probably got it in 1987 or 88 when I was in high school. I still have it (along with my FB-01 ha!) and even mess around with them on occasion these days for purely nostalgic reasons.
hohner keyboard at the end of the 80ies ,was supposed to learn how to play
but rather used the sequencer to program beats
then this one
then mpc2k and finally a laptop
1st- Yamaha RX17 (hated it! Used it with a QX21 Aack!)
2nd- Alesis HR-16 (still have it just because we've always been together!)
3rd- Boss DR-660 (still have, still use)
Now I use an Akai S2000 and synth modules, hard and soft, with a keyboard. I have used others, though, like the Korg Electribe, MC 505, SP 202.
