completely flipped samples

i'm giving a presentation on sampling for a digital copyright class i'm taking. i plan on going through some really obvious uses of samples (i.e. chic in "rappers delight," leon haywood in "nuthin but a g thang," etc.), but i also want to give some good examples of producers who have completely flipped the original sample.
so, as producers who pay attention to this sort of thing, what are some examples of tracks where a producer has taken a sample and turned it into something totally different from the original track (like where it's not immediately obvious that its a sample even if you heard the original and the sampled track next to each other)? i'm thinking some stuff by dilla, but i'd like to get some more options... thanks!

Yeah, I'd look at Premier's production for good examples. Another good bet is looking into some of PE's old stuff, when Bomb Squad was at their peak. They used so many layers of samples sometimes that you have to concetrate to hear all the various sounds (good luck in identifying most of them, however).

FYI - Sugarhill records' house band replayed Chic's "Good Times," it wasn't a sample.

Alchemist

Alchemist production on Jadakiss's "We gone make it." It would serve as a good example because on the intro Al plays it straight then proceeds to blow your mind when he flips it.

To mix it up a bit with some non hip hop you could use "Closer" by Nine Inch Nails as an example, he took the beat from Iggy Pop's "Nightclubbing" but changed it around some. You can still tell it is from the same song but it is definitely different.

Wont point to anything specific, but in my first hand experience, Kanye West is one of the most creative choppers i've ever seen

this is a real misconception. I believe trent has said he was "influenced" by iggy for closer, which is obvious from the tempo and the use of the 808 kick and snare, but they are very different 808's in trents song, clearly not a sampled loop.

I suppose it's entirely possible, though not probable, that he sampled the individual drum hits from "nightclubbin" and layered them with his own...but this is hardly revolutionary flipping a sample kind of stuff. I mean EVERYONE samples individual kick and snare drum hits, and again, i'm not even convinced he sampled the drum hits at all.

I think a good example for your class would be...

Kanye West..for Jay-Z's "Izzo(H.O.V.A)" for the flipping of the jackson 5 song think thats a good example

Rappers Delight doesn't sample Chic believe it or not! They used session musos to recreate the backing track. Just so ya know.

'Half Time' by Nas (Prod. by Large Professor)... not only does it use more than one sample, but the bass line s chopped from a few different parts of the rec, etc...

Trent definitely SAMPLED the kick from Nightclubbing, although it's clearly been mangled pretty well. Here's a quote from Trent himself: "Actually for "Closer", we sampled the kick drum off an old Iggy Pop record, "Nightclubbing", off Idiot." Hope that clears up the Closer kick debate.
