Hip Hop vocals

I've been noticing that hiphop vocals seem to have a nice raspy distortion to them that makes em cut thru the track. I don't think it's just the mc's voice either. Is this caused by the recording chain or added after. I just dont get any where near the sound quality and we use a neuman thru a tla valve mic pre ( which probs aint that great). Ive noticed that the distortion helps the vocals cut thru do that they dont have to be that loud to be heard..jus insterested as to what processing this involves..cheers

I cant say ive heard the distorted sound you refer to in any tracks i've listened to so im going to thow in a wild guess, perhaps the sound maybe the result of driving the vocal through a compressor, this would help it stand out more and be more consistant, aswell as boost any noise that was initially embedded through the signal chain, i.e poor quality preamps, line interferance etc.

i like a somewhat distorted vocal as well...it can be achieved with heavy comp for sure. but use it sparingly
