Vocal compressor for Rappers / R&B singers (1176)

We are looking to get a good compressor for tracking vocals. Right now we are just using the one in the 737-- then adding Renaissance Vox.

I know the 1176 is very popular for rock, but will it work well w/ rappers and R&B singers?

Have any of you tried the Purple MC-77 on rappers?

I wouldn't suggest a 1176 especially if it's the first compressor you are buying.
Check out a LA2A, DBX160X, Allen Smart, or even the summit. I love the summit for Hip hop....

Summit TLA-100

The 1176 is a tough compressor to get your ears around. It's not variable meaning you only have so many options with it.
The other compressors I suggested can be used in many situations.

edit: when talking about the 1176 I'm talking about the ratio settings.....

I think an 1176 is sweet on almost any vocals, but that's just me.

I've been using the Dynax on 99% on my vocal revordings. And it works like a chamr. Its really flexible (can go for Xtream to fost)

I love the 1176, but only if I'm looking for something really agressive.

just my 2 cents

Cheers

yeah...all the time. I've used a vintage one, an early # reissue, and a 6176.

RE: 1176

Remember that it's a very fast compressor, even at it's slowest setting (fully CCW). Sometimes in tracking vocals I prefer something slower/more gentle... like an LA3A (more or less a solidstate LA2)... I always prefered an 1176 during mixdown. But either way, it's a killer piece.

you´re talking about the 1176 as a hardware-comp, right? what about using the pre of the yamaha i88x going clean into daw and inserting uad 1176 as the comp? which levels would you drive the i88x for the clean signal and which the 1176?

Well, the difference is tracking with compression (e.g., PRINTING it) rather than monitoring with compression. If you leave the plugin inserted and never adjust it, I guess it's the same thing...

Never used a UAD1176, but I'm guessing it operates similar to the HW. Just turn the input up until you're getting the right amount of GR.

You direct monitoring jerks I wish I could hear my plugins when I was tracking.

I've been using a Buzz Audio soc 1.1 for tracking rappers all last year, it is a superb box for vocal tracking, very smooth and quite transparent and it's an absolute killer on bass too. If you've got a lunchbox try out a Buzz essence comp, great on vox and bass too, almost the same as the soc but has transformer balanced inputs and outputs for some colour.
