Bass samples... MAssive Attack, Portishead, Gotan Project sounding...

Hi there,

I'm specifically looking for samples of single bass notes, and preferably NOT complete basslines. I'm looking for heavy, dark bass, something you'd hear in some hip hop or electronica like Portishead, Massive Attack, Gotan Project. Phat, warm bass notes, nothing like a slap bass or fretless bass, nothing 80's sounding. Any suggestions on where to look?

Thanks very much!

there is a nice sample cd by a russian (maybe???) company called Vengeance and the cd is called Ultimate Bass.... exactly what your looking for... OR get an Access Virus, SH-101 (for sub bass), or the VSTi by spectrasonics called trilogy... alot of VSTi's out now have sythetic bass comparable to hardware keyboards now.... btw wouldn't hurt to learn a bit about Subtractive Synthesis... if you dont already know much..

Minimoog basses can be the answer to... almost anything.

It doesn't hurt to have SCI Pro One or Minimoog around ;-). I'm not sure with sSH101, it always sounded "wrong" to me. On other hand I love SH09 for this style of bass sounds.

Samples? Have no clue, sorry.

Spectrasonics' Trilogy is definitely great.

Bass samples don't cut it

I don't think bass samples cut it. You have no glide between notes, no filter tracking to them, limited sounds, dynamics, etc...

Well he said samples of single notes... You can load those into a sampler and have all the glide/filter/etc you want!

No, but I'd give it a shot. Bet money it wouldn't make me even think for a second to sell my Minimoog, or actual basses. No chance of a demo being out there is there?

I doubt a demo would be possible. It's pretty reasonably priced, though. But anyway, all the basses sound pretty great, and the "live basses" have good string release, slide, etc. noises. If you get the hang of it, you could truly fool a LOT of people. Actually, I'm sure the typical person would be fooled without tweaking much of anything.

fender p bass-> a nice tube DI-> DAW I think the fender P is the way to go for the portishead sound. Even if you're not a bass player, the music you mentioned has pretty simple bass lines, its all about the tone and feel, as long as you have some basic knowlege of the instrument (and some talent) . You dont have to be stanley clarke or Jaco Pastorus to throw down a triphop bassline. Just sit in a dimly lit room with a bass guitar, a pack of cigarettes and some bourbon.
