I know someone that had that problem with a u87, there is a little distortion in those. I think he put it in omni and baffled it somehow for window reflections and that smoothed it out. I've never done that, but for my ears a u87 sounds better if your off of it a little IMO.

I wonder how that SE reflection filter would sound with it in omni?

I never record any vocals in omni. I also make most vocalists eat the mic. There are a few exceptions.

I don't know the conditions of your vocal booth and mic, but I have a Langevin CR 2001 which is a VERY good mic, but very sensitive. So I just lowered the gain and told the singer to keep a distance of give or take 30 cm to the pop shield. But it depends on the vocalist, the room, the mic, your settings on your daw and/or pre-amp, what mic and the conditions of the mic etc.

how far? 1 1/2 feet. but typically 4 inches or less. I only tell rappers who can't stand still to back off the mic.

dynamic/loud rap artists aren't likely to distort the mic, so you can keep 'em close. just back off the gain at the mic pre.

distance minimum: 15-20 cm to avoid bass bost!

Use the -10dB on the mic if the rapper is very loud, so you don't overdrive the capsule of the mic! Sorry for my bad english!
