Help: Need Mic & Pre

I need to add a mic and a pre to my setup, especially since i am recording a rap artist. We have tracked some songs at a studio using UA610 and a Neumann TLM 103, they came out pretty good. I cant really afford those 2 so please reccomend a decent gear for me, I have a 1200-1500 budget. I am recording into a Macbook pro running MP pro tools, M-audio 1814 interface.

Thanks

My suggestion is with a $1500 budget, spend $1000 on a pre and $500 on your mic...

@LCD Thanks for the splitt, but I need advice on which pair to buy.

so far I have decided to pair a ADK Hamburg[$250] with a Brent Averill 1272 Mic Pre Amps[$1140], based on reviews / research on GS. Does anyone have better ideas. I will probably drop the cash tommorow.

Somone please help me out i am overwhelmed trying to get the best bang for buck for a mic and pre...i already picked up an adk hamburg, now I need a pre. I have 1300 budgeted for a pre. There are several options adk ap1, bA 1272, La 610, my problem is, is it wise to plug any of these decent amps into a M-audio 1814. Or is it better if I get an apogee mini as a stand alone coverter which i can get for 650 used and get an adk ap1[api opamp].

please drop any ideas....

There's nothing to think about... out of those choices, you get the 1272 and you run it into the 1814 until you can upgrade to something better. You may also want to consider an API or A Designs preamp in a lunchbox. Converters are much less important than a good mic and preamp. Actually, I would probably upgrade the microphone before replacing the converter next.

I may on occasion talk about some of the products I am a dealer for in my posts.. and that's OK! I sell them because I like them. Not vice versa. It's more fun to talk about things you know and love, then things you don't.

1500 dollars...hmmm.....For rap you could buy any MXL mic around 4-500 dollars. They are pretty good! For raps the cheaper MXL´s are around 150 bucks and still good enuff. But if you want a mic that picks up more when you are also using it for singers and stuff, the more expensive ones are better. I bought a relatively expensive Langevin CR 2001 and it is the BEST mic I ever heard. It easily competes with the mics in the range of 2000-6000 dollars, so it really depends on the mic. Test a few in your local store!

Amps, do you have ADAT as well? I really like the Focusrite Octopre, that one is 1000, the Octopre LE edition is around 500 I think. The LE editions doesn´t have some features that are on the Octopre Pro, but you can always add those things in the mix later on. Do you use Logic, Cubase, Pro Tools etc? Those programs can deal with it easily. Hope this helps
