JoMox XBase 09?

Is there a better unit in this price range for hip hop drums?

The demos were kind of whacked on their site .. couldn't get a great sense of what the thing could do.

It sounds like a 909. The analog hip-hop drum machine was the 808 and the xBase doesn't do 808. Get a sampler.

it doesn´t´´really sound like an 909....it´s similar chartacter but this certain dense compressed 909 sound is not there...
ut the kick module on the xbase is awesome for 808 style kicks and basses...you can play and/or programm them in a chromatic manner which is great...

there´s also an special option to get 808 samples into the machine (hhs, snr etc)....

but an mpc or another sampler is a way more versatile option in that price range....

the sequencer on the xbase is cool, but this tr style seuencers are more suited for techno/house i think...hip hop is about the mpc...imho

I have an AirBase. It is phat as phuck!!!!!! proper analogue kik, snr and toms, with 8-bit samples and analogue envelopes for the rest. It has a great feature where you can reverse the samples, and a nice filter on the hats you can modulate.

Beats sample CDs to a pulp in phatness.

However, for the sequencer I would look for towards the MPC. The Jomox doesn't hold a candle to an MPC for swing...

I always thought the jomox and machinedrum stuff was way overrated and overpriced.

I've never heard a demo of either that really sounded that good...but for some reason the europeans love them.

yes I do like my jomox.
it's a good tool.
the sequencer is tight and feels good.
(I do electronicfunktechnobrokenbeathiphopdubbygrim e, and you can coax more than one style out of any drummackine, IMHO. but don't let that deterr you. )
you need to spend some intimate time with it. it has some strangeness in the OS but it never fails the job.

if you want 808 exactly get a 808
the jomox can bring you close if you tweak it, and put some eq on it.
here is some good info on the 808 kick
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/Feb0...ecrets0202.asp
that BD88 (in the article) is a one trick pony but... an 808 trick

a sampler is a good solution too, but not the same vibe IMHO

,,,, the nice thing is that there is more than one way to make BD and SN
innovate! IMHO

the sequencer IS different. more emphasis on walking bass kindof stuff
minute changes to make it come alive
IMO

hope that is not too criptic
I love the sequencer on my EMU MP7
the basses are nice too on that the bassdrum not so nice.

like the MPC seq too myself

Exactly, those demos sound horrible to me...especially considering the price.

I've heard better sounds out of a stupid groovebox.

Just my opinion...

I agree with above poster, to get real 808... Use a real 808.
Considering price, it's gonna be cheaper than either of these newer/techno boxes.
TR-808's & 909's are almost always for sale used. And when you are done you can resell it at little to no loss since they still hold value well.

But don't get me wrong, the MD is a cool little box, I have one.
I find the TRX is cool & useful for new electronic sounds, layering, etc... but it's no "real 808" or 909.
Where it really shines is 'tweaking' sounds.
So if you have a MD-UW, load up some solid 808 samples & you will have very dope little box.
The Step sequencing is definitely a trip back in time but you can get used to it & compliment it with swing, I am not a fan of the MD's quantize options (lack thereof).
