Thread Starter | Help choosing between CAD M9 Tube Mic & AT4040
Hey all I am about to buy a new mic. I am choosing between the CAD M9 Tube Microphone and the at4040 I have used the AT4040 ALOT and I liked how it sounded but I have read a bunch of positive reviews of the vocal quality of the M9 also it is a tube mic for $300! Attatched is a song i did with the vocals recorded on an at4040. for those of you have recorded hip hop vocals through both mics please let me know what your experience was and of course your recommendations are appreciated. Thanks Poppa Pill

The M9 is pretty cool...has lots of air...i usually have to eq in a little warmth. My capsule when bad on mine a few years ago and i was too lazy to send it back so i'm replacing it with a peluso capsule next week. I think it's a decent mic but not sure if it's a go-to for vocals nor am i sure how it sounds compared to an at4040. I'd try to get one on ebay for like 2 hundy if i was you so you could resell it for that price if it wasn't your cup of tea. |

thanks. I placed an order for a blemished CAD m9 that was 239 on zzounds Something just doesnt sit right with me about buying high end audio gear on ebay... I always feel Ill get scammed or end up with slightly deffective gear and no easy recourse (besides of course trackin em down with the goons and 86in em which could get messy and expensive...) The AT Mics are quite good, only problem I encountered so far were especially the highs. Sorry but I don't know the right words for it right now, I guess it was "hiss" sounds? Had a lot of problem with one of my rappers who has a quite high voice and "hisses" a lot. Took me a lot of work to get out that stuff. This ist were the AT will/might fail you. But they are quite good for their price range in my eyes. Simmel |

I had a similar problem with the AT usually only on my voice I was getting alot of sibilance but Some light deessing usually took care of it, that was the thing I didnt like about the at4040. Poppa |

hell i bought a car on ebay LOL, my pops bought a house the the m9 is a good little mic. i'd use it over a 4040. i owned a m9 a few years ago and actually use it a lot more than i used the solid tube i had back in the day... if you can get one under $300 its a hell of a deal. haven't heard the new triton series or what ever they're called | |

Finally got the mic today. The CAD M9 is so sweet. It came in a steel case that looks like it could stand being runover by a tank or if worse comes to worse be used to break someones nose/face, very cool appearance. I just got to play with it for a while and I think it sounds great. I recorded a track with it then I used it to record some samples Me playing acoustic guitar tambourine maraqcas etc. Just to test it on instruments and it sounded beautiful. My power supply is a little fickle and prone to buzz if the xlr cable isnt in complete contact but its a minor issue. Here is a freestyle track I did.The beat was bounced real quick out of Reason as a single stereo file so I could get to testing the mic. It's a quick mix but I really think it sounds good. I had to put a deesser on it as was suggested but my voice is naturally very sibilant when recorded. In this track I used a Massey C4 Compressor / Dididesign De-Esser on all vocal tracks, along with a T-Racks Mastering Suite on the master fader. Enjoy and please comments/criticisms are appreciated.
