old school dre (the chronic, etc.)

On songs like Nothing But a G Thang....what synths did he use in the higher register?

I love those sounds...and those simple parts were great hooks.

Are there any softsynths that can pull off those sounds well? Thanks a lot fellas

If you're talkin bout that traditional west coast gangsta whine try messing around with sine waves...

Haha thanks....any Softsynths you can recommend in particular for the early 90's gangsta sounds in general.

Yeah I'm 21 so it seems old school to me..haha

Do you have reason 3 by any chance? "Gangsta Lead" in maelstrom is pretty close. Great cutting saw lead.

EDIT: for this sound, i would slow down the rate in mod a and probably change the shape of mod a to something a little smoother like a sine...just played with it for a few minutes. Also if you turn on the other osc and try some other saws you can get it to bite a little harder too. This is a good preset.

2nd EDIT: Sounds just like "Murder was the Case." So not exactly a chronic sound.

What synths do you own now? you can probably do it in the ones you have.

Thanks again.. sorry if this question seems a little amateurish btw...I recently got into hip hop production.. I've played / recorded rock my whole life.

I just copped a Triton Extreme for a good price..that could possibly have what I'm looking for.

Besides that all I have is Trilogy which is really just for bass and the Softsynths that come with Sonar.

Any current synth on todays market will have some sort of lead patch that will give you that p-funk sound that was som commonly used in the whole west coast gangsta sound (which i personally miss)

personally if you listen closely to those album you will notice that they werent even using true analog synths that would have created that sounds. sounds kind thin and digital and also like is wasnt sequenced in any type of monophonic sound (which it should) (my korg ms20 has a fat synth lead. but like I said, any current hardware or software synths will give you what you need

The synths used for those sound are

Mini Moog
Juno 106

Black Synth players in the 70's used the Juno and mini moog alot some of the groups like Cameo and Parliment had great synth players in thier bands (Bernie Worrell was the best) anyone just getting into synths should listen to the song flashlight by parliment to hear how Bernie could freak a Mini Moog

today I like using a Subtractor synth in Reason for that sound play with the pitch bend and set the portamento (glide) to about 4 or 5
