Low - Trust

Hi Tchad

I saw Low in London the other night and only when they closed their set with (That's How You Sing) Amazing Grace did I remember that you mixed that record/album.

Low is a band which seems to in a lot of cases be the polar opposite of a lot of the other bands we're talking about here - so slow, more simple arrangements, they haven't got the complexity of a Peter Gabriel or Los Lobos record, clearly.

That said, Trust, to my ears, is one of their 'more complex' records, it seems to have a lot more layers to it.

How did you approach this record? How much is the band involved in shaping their sound in the mix? Any good stories?

I specifically really like the sound of the aforementioned song - the drums (specifically the snare sound) are very un-Low-like but sound really good and really work for them - any words about that?

Thanks very kindly for your time & knowledge!

I'm sorry about this but I just don't remember specifics. The recording had so much great material already my job was just to extend ranges while carving out space frequency wise.
As for approach, I did what I always do, try to be spontaneous, with abandon.

I shall make my followup question more general then - what sort of project do you find more challenging and or fun - a stripped-down three piece with a few extras like Low or a crazy complicated job like PG?

Thanks!

I like it all as long as the artist is up for experimentation which I find is diminishing these days in pop. More and more projects come in with less margin for the wild card.
I find it easier to experiment with sounds in simpler environments, like a trio or just very pared down arrangements. More of a challenge with denser music.
