Recordings that influenced YOU!

Hi Tchad,

I have been amazed at the details we've all been able to garner from your posts.

I don't think anyone has asked what music, mixes, producers, etc were most influencial on you in your early days? Does anyone's work directly relate to the style you have developed?

(Is there one song that 'does it all' for you? - Jules)

I could make guesses (Shelly Yakus? Jimmy Iovine?), but I'd love to hear what you have to say on that.

As they say on Public Radio, "I'll take my answer off the air".

I can tell you that the first two records I ever bought were Jimi Hendrix/Band of Gypsys (how to you top a performance like 'Machine Gun'?) and King Crimson/ In the Court of the Cimson King.
There's so much I like out there in all genres and decades I can't possibly list it.
As far as early sounds are concerned maybe the most influence has come from Hendrix/Electricladyland, King Crimson/Islands (check out 'Ladies Of The Road'). Also KC 'Larks Tounges....' and 'Starless....', Van der Graff Generator, Pink Floyd before 'Dark Side', lot's of Motown, early Peter Hammill and Todd Rundgren. Beatles and Stones of course, Syd Barrett, Lol Coxill and Ron Geeson had quite an effect on me atmos wise. Any, I'll say again, any Nino Rota recording, and the 'Barbarella' soundtrack is crazy good.
Mixes I remember getting me once I started working in a studio:
Clearmountain, too many to mention but Willie Deville-'Gun Control' and 'Assasin of Love' come to mind, Peter Gabriel/4 'Security' (amazing album), Neville Bros. album-'Yellow Moon', Bowie 'Lodger' and 'Scary Monsters' ('Ashes To Ashes' is perfect pop to me), I could go on with jazz, classical, 'world' music but won't.
Recent records: Dre, Timbaland, Eminem, 50 cent ('In Da Club' kills me), Missey E, Audioslave #1, Queens of the Stoneage, don't really like Britteny but 'Toxic' sounded wild. Goldfrapp, Kings Of Leon,......
can't think, I'll add more tomorrow.

Wrong on the Yakus/Iovine guess.

Ha! Oh well. Thanks for the thorough reply.

For the last few years I have been putting together an importable track with mixes to reference in the studio. It has gotten so large that I have to figure out a better way, but some of my favorite tracks to reference are on the Suzanne Vega 99F record, and the new Paul Simon/Eno record. It's a thrill to hear where it comes from (sorta).

Thanks

I agree - it's possibly the greatest marriage of an experimental format with pop songs. Bears endless relistening...
