mixing philosophies

i wanted to ask about mixing and the general approach. it seems that some of your work is so "other worldly" or maybe more like "hyper reality" that i wonder where you are coming from when you create them.

do you look at the recorded tracks as raw data with which to manipulate into something interesting - do you frequently have that kind of freedom with other people's productions?

or is it more about talking with the artist/producer about what they are going for and how to maximize the impact etc...?

sculpting vs. realizing?

i am sure it is not always one way or the other but i'd love to hear your thoughts on how you look at your role as a mixer.

thanks!

I'm not incredibly versatile as a mixer. I do what I do. People come to me for that.
I rarely think about it + I listen and let the music take hold as fast as it can + emotion is the most important thing รท not any one particular sound =spontaneous abandon.

20 years on and still trying to get it.
