Sheryl Crow

Wondering if you might talk a little about the making of the 2nd Sheryl Crow record. I always liked the attitude/vibe of that record. Was there much pressure to deliver a commercial follow up to TNMC?

Thanks for the forum.

I think it is by far her best record, certainly her best sounding record. One of my favorites for listening to new rooms and speakers, just a geat mix all around.

Great record. One of my favs.
No pressure came from Sheryl. She was in a great frame of mind and had written these amazing songs, 'Home', 'Change', 'Everyday...'.
She sent a DAT of three roughs and asked if I was interested to mix it.
'Happy', 'Change' and 'Maybe Angels'(???I think). I listened to them all night, over and over. Couldn't wait to call her management the next morning and say 'yes'.

Total professional. Incredible voice. She blew me away in the studio. I learned a lot on those sessions.

LL mic pre and DI box. Both incredible devices. All hail Johnathan Little.
Mitchell and I reworked a few songs on the record which required recording new parts (using the LL pre).

That record is always a reference for me-one of the best albums of the 90's in my opinion. I heard it on the radio when I was 16 or 17, bought it immediatley.

I am pretty new to this game, all I can say is that record is one of the reasons I got interested in this business. Must have bought it 4 times over the last 11 years, and I still use it as a benchmark in different studio and FOH environments.

Thanks for Tchad for taking the time to answer everyone's questions.

Cheers

Mr. Blake,

Would you mind giving us some specifics on this session like signal paths on Vox and acoustics etc? I have to say, this is one of my favorite recordings ever. I know the songs are great - every frickin' one(she's an unbelievable) - but you did a masterful job on that one, Bro.

Thanks so much for your time.

Tchad, very nice work! That is one of my all time favorite albums!!!

I love the way her vocal sounds on that record. Do you remember what you used on it during the mix? 1176...?

I love that whole record start to end.

Thank you but you'll have to ask Trina Shoemaker for the info. She recorded the album. She's very good which made it a breeze for me to mix.
The few things we did record I remember using Mitchell's 251>Little Labs or 1084 pre for vocals(ADL) and gtr(LA3A).

Thanks.
ADL or LA3A...mmmm..... can't remember. I rarely use 1176 on vocal. Sometimes a DBX160X (very underated compressor) or API 525 or Distressor.
