Not if You Were the Last Junkie on Earth - Dandy Warhols

Just a gush I suppose, this song is as about as close a band has come to the Rolling Stones' "Brown Sugar" I have ever heard.

Still a radio hit here in the UK.

And I love it!

Hats off to you Tchad, nice mix job!

Wooooo!

Yes, yes, I love this record.

Dense and Beautiful - I'd like to know more about the approach you took mixing these songs. and also if you had any tidbits on some of the key effects gear , I'm sure I am not the only one wondering....

Come Down

I know this isn't a question for Tchad, but so be it.

Just thought I'd chime in on this thread. Having Tchad mix this Dandys record was such a great experience. We were all pretty happy with how the tracks were sounding before the mix, but it was a real thrill getting to hear what Tchad would come up with after a couple of hours alone in the control room. I had been a HUGE fan of Tchad's for a few years and it was so cool to see him in action. It was clear he wasn't really too concerned with technical issues. He would just get the 550's bumping, the 610's smashing, the Sans Amps barking and the Smart C1 pumping, and the songs took on a whole new life.

I learned a lot during that session. Mainly that it's so much better to take some chances and to work quickly on instinct rather than worry too much about getting everything 'dialed in'.

Plus he's just a really cool guy to hang out with.

Just wondering bout a detail on 'Not if you were the last junkie on earth' ...
There's a sound that sounds like like some kind of distorted/compressed-to-death 8th-note-delay on the snare - very easy to hear in the intro - but when the song starts this sound seems to precede the first snare-hit? What is it?
... and it sounds super-cool btw :-) ... sort of sets the whole sound/ambience of the song!

Thanks
Thomas

[Hey Jules the last thing I want to do is hijack a Tchad thread, but I can actually answer this question specifically]

Thomas-

I'm answering this because I don't think Tchad would know specifically...

That sound was a short reverb delayed by an 1/8 note that was tracked in reverse. You know, like, back in the old days when one would flip a reel of 2" over to do that kind of thing.

I wasn't sure it really fit into the mix when I printed it, but then Tchad ran it through a Sans-Amp, and, well..... thumbsup

We were going for a mutated "Dont' Bring Me Down" kind of feel.

Tony
