Woodface - Fall at your feet

Hello Tchad,

Thanks for doing this!

'Woodface' by Crowded House is one of my favourite albums of all times, 'Fall At Your Feet' being a particularly wonderful track.

Can you tell anything about how you and Mitchell Froom recorded this song? I'd be interested in recording technique as well as how the session took place - in what sequence did you record the tracks; was there a lot of live playing or was it mainly overdubbed; was it recorded in a short period of time or were the recordings spread out over a longer period; how did you get that wonderful vocal sound? Was there a feeling, when working on that track, that something really special was being created or was it just 'one of the tracks'?

I could ask hunderd of questions about this particular track (those drums and bass are soooo steady and supportive of the track.... guitar parts are wonderful...don't get me started on the vocal arrangements...) but most of all I'm interested in what you think makes the track special (if you think it is, of course...)

Thank you for your time and candor!

It's a great song. I don't remember much about the recording except it was at Platinum Studios in Melbourne. Same set up as the rest of the album.
I do remember it was, to begin with, a song that wasn't working and Mitchell and Neil hashed it out for a good while.
Great song and vocals + great arrangement can't be beat, especially when Bob Clearmountain mixes.

Is this setup documented somewhere? Are there other places on the web or articles I've missed? (anyone?)

Or - if you have the time Tchad - could you elaborate on the setup for Woodface?

Thanks again for doing this, very informative!

Cheers,

Ivo W.

Tchad,

Having worked @ platinum many moons ago.. were u a fan of the TILED room with the moving walls?

Also did you ever do much stuff @ Tim's studio 'Periscope' where a lot of this album was also recorded? I used to work there a bit and loved the Neotek elite they had, and the Art deco vibe of the house was a soothing ouch for most sessions. My parents nearly bought that house when he sold it all off and moved back to NZ, with me being a massive enx/crowdies fan (almost to a sad status ) I was almost in heaven for a brief moment!

Cheers
Wiggy

My tracking set up isn't very interesting. Really standard.

K= D112
Sn=57
Hat=57,km84or451
Toms=421
Mono kit=441>level loc or????1176/610/.....etc
OH=Neuman KU100..... OK maybe not so standard, but should be.
Gtrs=57/coles/ km84......whatever.
Bass=DI>desk, aux send to Sans Amp>line in. Just cables, no interfaces.
Voc= 251 or 57 or D112>ADL or Distressor.

Any good mic pre will do but I prefer old Neve for Vocal.

no mic on snare btm? is your top mic over the ring or more on the shell?

do you put the d112 inside the kick? do you ever do the outside kick mic
for more low end?

Depends on the snare. Sometimes I mic the rim.
Kick, usually halfway inside the shell, but sometimes out.
There is no one way.

D112 on Vox...

Tchad,

In what situation would you use a D112 on vox? What sort of character does the mic impart to the track?

Thanks again,

-Tom

Check out 'The Bunny' on Mitchell Froom's solo album "Dopamine".
Doughty from Soul Coughing on vocal w/D112.
