Talking Dense mixes.

Hi Tchad, I'm a big admirer of all your work and thank you very much for agreeing to do this.

Since you make those wonderful distortion and compressing process to drums, bass, guitars obviously some things start to sound really big!!

So my question is: What kind of processing do you make to the main vocal track in order to cut through a dense mix?

Thank you Mr. Tchad!!

Thank you.
Sonically dense maybe but musical arrangements are usually sparse... which helps. I can tell you basic gear if that helps.
RECORD:
Main mics= Elam 251 or Shure 57> Neve 1073 or 1084 pre(no EQ).> ADL comp.
MIX:
API 550aEQ> DBX902>Distressor>Pultec EQP 1A.

Don't be afraid to use 'em.

Thanks for your response Tchad, and when a mix comes with tons of tracks, do you usually mutes what ever it takes to suit your kind of mixing?

Also, do you insert your Sans Amp technique on your vocal track or do you blend it with the original?

Please excuse me for so many questions but I'm a big fan and this is a great oportunity for me.

All the best.

1084 eq

Hello Tchad,
I've seen you mentioning in a few posts you use 1084's without the eq engaged. Is that coincidence, or is there a particular reason for not liking the color of the 1084 eq? I'm asking cause ofthen I tend to associate a bunch of your mixes with the fat class A sound . (I'd probably think the same way, even if you didn't use any Neves at all); Thanks,. Doug

I use the 1084 EQ often. I think I was mentioning a mix vocal chain where I like to run through the line amp just for it's tone. I don't often EQ vocal with the Neve even when using the mic pre except with a 57.
Instruments, absolutely great EQ.
