"Anthem" -- Phantom Planet "The Guest"

What is that string sound on "Anthem?" -- what a great vibe, starting with those & the beat and kicking in to the verse over the electric piano & "small" loop. I was hoping that song would get a release as a single, but I saw them at the Roxy after "California," and they were already trying out songs for their second record. Definitely a great tune

Wish I could remember. I'll see if I can find a copy of the record and get back to you.

i'm a big fan of that whole record. i'd love to hear any notes you can give on the recording and mixing process. the guitars and drums sound so great, imo.

Done at the Sound Factory with my usual set up, drums in the small room, guitars in the bathroom, bass DI+Sans Amp, vocal 251 or 57.
I don't remember anything special set up wise. Just a really fun session.

you might not recall, but if you do...

how heavy-handed were you and mitchell in shaping the songs/arrangements? that album was such a huge leap forward for them in terms of songwriting. did the band have the stuff pretty much nailed when they came in, or was it more collaborative? the arrangements on that album are just perfect. like, the back-up vox on 'always on my mind' instantly turned me into a phantom planet fan for life.

Mitchell is an amazing arranger and composer. There's a big part of him in there.

I love this album both the songwriting and the production/recording. In fact that's how I discovered who you where from listening to this album. After hearing it, it just sounded different than what a lot of other people where doing and that's when I searched on the internet and your name came up. I LOVE this album, it is really, really, really good!

How long did it take to record and mix the whole album? I would love to read any anecdotes or cool stories about the making of the album.

Thnx for doing this!

Can't remember how long, six weeks maybe. We work 5 maybe 6 days a week, no more than 10 hours a day including meals.
Laughed a lot with those guys around, especially Jason. Very fun and funny group.

I couldn't believe it when I found out that Jason Schwartzman was the drummer in Phantom Planet. Rushmore is one of my all time favorite movies.

Can you recall any especially funny moments during the making of the album with Jason?

Also, I would think that it would be a trip to hear your recording on a major television series like the OC. Was that strange/cool the first time you saw the beginning of The OC?

Thanks again for being here, I want to ask you about Real World vs. Studio B as well maybe another thread. I notice that Studio B uses NS 10's...

I haven't had TV for 12 years now. I watch movies on a TV but I don't watch broadcast so I never heard the PP stuff or Sia on the air.
RW vs SSF= totally different animals.
