Well, that’s a genuine Herman Miller Mirra chair. Very comfortable & highly recommended. Sorry, I couldn’t resist. |

Tchad is notoriously private, so I'm amazed he allowed those pictures on the Internet. Where's the dummy head? |

So, what you think the Toft is being used for?

| I would guess he is using it as a summing mixer. MITB, then analog out to the Toft.

I notice on the website they're still using the word "trident"

Do you not suspect Tchad's using the ATB as an INPUT mixer? I ask for two reasons: 1) the amount of tracking Tchad seems to be doing in that room 2) the placement of the Toft in the room (doesn't look like "the" mix position) -Eric @ Studio Curve Dominant

1. Either he is bringing Pro Tools out of the 192 and into the Toft line level for summing. Or 2. He is using it to track with in his room. My guess is... AND THIS IS PURELY A GUESS. It's basically a large summing box, with faders. Why have the ICON unless you are going to use it. But I am willing to be wrong about that.

It's the layout of that room, and the fashion in which the Toft is positioned in that room - it looks very much positioned like a tracking mixer. Or a perhaps I should say "throughput mixer" ?? With individual channels going to discrete PT input channels. It certainly WOULD be nice to have a Toft console handy for that purpose, no? -Eric @ Studio Curve Dominant

i just did a search for tchad blake and found that he uses binaural recording extensively... can somebody name some songs in which he has used the technique? FWIW, MY guess is that he is using it between his sound sources and PT. respect,

Couldnt it be that he uses the EQ's as hardware plug ins and as a/or routing device for his other outboard? way cool anyway, and wouldnt it be great to have Tchad here for a Q&A on this, since the ATB is a subject that is going on for so long now, as a bonus maybe and maybe as a great source of inspiration for other ATB users? Jules could you arange that? Cheers

There are some albums he recorded for the womad select lable which are pure binaural field recordings, the zimbabwe one is fantastic.

I think Tchad Blake is a great engineer and really underrated. I love his work with Phantom Planet. It would be cool to have him on here for a Q & A but I doubt he'd do it. bcgood |

hello, One of my former assistants just brought this forum to my attention and I'm amazed by the curiosity. Contrary to one of the notes posted here I am not notoriously private, just unaware anyone is interested and maybe a bit lazy. I can clear some things up: -Speakers; yes, Linn 328A. Hideously expensive with no competition in sound. -Desk; DD Icon D-Control. Brilliant big mouse. -Chair; very comfortable. -Private/pictures; No / I didn't know Malcom would put them on his site. They were for him to see his desk at Mongrel. (My new mix room and entry into PT's,' the box' , world. I'm a late comer). -Toft ATB; The ATB is powerful and sounds amazing. Originally bought to be a summing amp for PT's mixing. ATB production delays forced me to start mixing in the box without it. I'm learning how to make the box work for me now so the ATB is used for OD's when needed (no tracking at Mongrel) and for some out of the box processing (there's a lot of that ) which is then recorded into that box. Any cool new plug-ins you've tried lately????

The Chandler EMI Limiter plug is great for a plug. Here's a question for you -- do you favor Neve for drums or API? The Phantom Planet album comes to mind for me. I love the sound of that!! Thanks |

Hi Tchad, Thanks for replying, big fan of your work. As for plugs some which you may like are the Massey Tapehead, really simple two dial control which is really good at shaping sounds with analog style saturation, and the camelcrusher I find useful, kind of like a dbx 163 with a low pass resonant filter and a distortion dial. Best of all it is free! http://www.masseyplugins.com/ http://www.camelaudio.com/ Nice to see you around here Tchad! |

| Mic Pre's for drums Quote:
A long answer: For drums, I don't have a favorite. I'll use whatever is quick for the sound to get a performance, and by the time I've plastered some Sans Amp on the drums plus compression with cheap compressors it wouldn't really matter what pre I used. I like API, NEVE, TOFT ATB, SSL....lots of different pre's. I'm sure there are lot's of inexpensive ones out there I'd like as well. (Phantom Planet would have been Neve1083 on Kick,Snare, OH. API on the rest).

Thank you, I know the Massey plugs, they're great. I need to check out the Camelcrusher though. Sounds like my kind of box. THX again,

| Gear interested | crane song phoenix is killer. all the UAD stuff is great. surprisingly enough, digidesign's EQ3 is pretty good. aptrigga is cool for some quick "sound replacer" type stuff. sound toys echoboy is an absolute must own. and the eventide clockworks bundle is really good too. question. when you sans-amp drums (i assume you are using a bass driver pedal) have you modded yours (or put anything in front of it) to deal with the instrument level input and the unbalanced circuit? thanks for peter gabriel up, low trust, and all the soul coughing records.......some of my favorite sounding records. |

Hi Tchad, welcome aboard! Great to have you here, I too am a big fan of your work. Although I hate to recommend Waves because of their extortionist upgrade policies, their linear phase multiband dynamics plug is great for enhancing, or really messing with, lots of things. I think Izotope Ozone might be a good substitute, I haven't played with it yet, but their plugs are generally very cool. Dynamizer, now out under Roger Nichol's name, is pretty great too.

Hi Tchad, and welcome. Sorry to barge in. Just wondering which "cheap compressors" you'd be referring to??

I love that Tchad Black comes on here and when questioned about pre's just kinda shrugs it off. I still can't tell much a damn difference between pre's. |
