| Low end Welcome, Russ! The bottom end on Voodoo is amazing! Anything you'd care to share about the recording of the bass on "How Does it Feel" or "Back & Forth"?

| hello, for amps we used an Ampeg B15, B18 and an old solid state amp in a big cabinet that's at electric lady. i can't remember what the name of it was, but it had a dirty sound to it. mics were fet47, u47, m49. and usually a neve 1081 pre or focusrite isa115. i guess 75% of the time i used an LA2A (vintage) in the chain with just slight compression to take care of some of the transients. everything went to tape and no di's whatsoever on the album. Pino mostly used his favorite bass, which is a 1961 Fender Precision. It's also how Pino plays his bass. He has an amazing touch and he'll use his palm to get a "deader" sound or just barely pluck it. He tunes his e string down sometimes as well. "Untitled" is actually Raphael Saadiq playing bass on D'Angelo's ESP active bass (incidently, that bass was stolen). I'm going to start a thread about low end... all the best

| Amazing! Not expecting you to give away any trade secrets her, but you gotta be working the low freq band of the Neve/focusrite... The bass notes on the 2nd rap on "Back & Forth" destroy every low-end transducer I own. What in the world do monitor with when mixing? Paul

| Just went out and bought Voodoo this morning. I can see what the fuzz is about, amazing work I must say. OK I've been listening on headphones form my laptop computer and it seems that the kick is mixed slightly LEFT and the bass slightly RIGHT. Am I off base on this? If not , would not this be the reason why the lowend sounds so huge on this record since bass and kick don't have to fight for the center spot? Ron |

Thanks for hanging with us! So you say you used an fet47, a u47 and an m49. Did you use them all at once (I assume not) or separately? Were you up close on the speaker or were you back a few feet? Care to elaborate a bit on the bass setup? Thanks again.
