| Background check? Your mention of Beth Orton (someone who I've listened to for a while) got me wondering: My own work isn't with folks who have a resumé or well-established voice, so I've never really considered this, but when you work with someone like Beth Orton, who has a solid discography, do you give a listen to past releases with an ear for the mix (sort of like the way a talk-show host does has some background prepared for a guest), or do you just focus on the tracks in front of you? | I'm already a fan of her's so I knew her style. But to answer your question, No, I wouldn't do research because, unlike a talk show host interviewing a guest, an artist doesn't want to hear or talk about the past. They're always moving forward to new ground, letting go of old ideas, rediscovering themselves, experiencing new avenues. So if I were to listen to their old records and use some of the past mix approaches, that might very well put the record in the wrong direction. The past is gone, they're coming to me to mix the present. They are not interested in reliving those old feelings....for the most part. So I, unlike a talk show host, am only interested about today. |
