Average time spent on a mix

Michael what is the average amount of time you spend mixing a full band contempoary rock song.......lets say in the style of Coldplay /Aimee Mann. One song in a few hours or over a couple of days.......and do you constantly print mixes in the early stages of mixing and many different versions or just shoot for that one perfect mix? Thanks again for donatating you time and insights!

I spend about four or five hours to completion. On Coldplay I was spending a relaxed 8 hours. The process was a bit different with them because I’d have each one come in starting with Will on drums, Guy on Bass , Johnnie and then last would be Chris. He’d make the over all vision comments and address any keyboard or vocal comments. They are real pros. Comments about their instrument was always made in respect to the overall song. Many of you know this is generally not the case and you fight hard to have them listen as a group. I do not want to spend two days on a mix. I’m just the wrong guy for that. I find the important elements and vibe of the song usually in the first ten minutes and then build from there.
