How (and why) is the key of the song influencing your mix decisions

If I read you correctly in the bass/d.i./amp post, you wrote that EQ moves to the bass guitar track are made with the key of the song as a variable. Why is that?

All instruments have a "sweet range" and once out of that it may require the musician to approach the part differenty, say on a different part of the neck. Well applying the same eq to all bass parts just does not take into account all of these varaibles. Just like how a singers voice changes in timbre relative to a key.

Am I explaining myself?

How soon into the session/mix are you before this becomes a priority?

Do you ride the drum kit as a whole during the song?

Depending on the material I may ride the kit, cetainly I will look at fills and transitions in and out of sections to see if a little lift will help.
