Sound signature

Hello Mr. Killen I'd like to ask you, what are you going for when you start a session?
Do you like to inject your personal flavor in a sound, are you driven by the player or both?

Thanks in advance.

Haryy,

In the beginning I am going for a sound that inspires the artist and blows them away. I want to keep their excitment level up so that they begin to hear all the possibilities with the arrangement.

I am sure some of it is driven by personal taste but hopefully its modified by the content of the music and what the artist is trying to say.

I like to work with musicians who bring a strong sonic identity which is also part of the inspiration.

Haryy,

By that I mean players such as guitarist Gerry Leonard who brings a whole palette of sounds and inventiveness to the instrument. He has a very distinct take on guitar as do a lot of players. Same with drummer Jay Bellrose, unique sounding kit and technique.

The reality is that most good pro's have that in their arsenal, it just a question of finding the right combinatios for the project.

So I am not just looking for a gtr or drum sound, I am looking for THE sound for that song. Players who can interpret some subjective directions.... "I want it to sound like clouds before a thunderstorm "!!!

Listen to the guitars on Duncan Sheiks "White Limousine" or Jay's drums on the New Orleans katrina benefit album, the Irma Jackson cut.

Does that give you more of a sense of what I am describing?
