Robert Palmer

Hi Phil,

Thanks for doing this. I have always been a fan of the late great Robert Palmer's music from my childhood and it helped me shape my own stance on the stage in my later years, for which I am debted. I would like to thank you for your contribution to the sounds that filled my hands in the air in front of my wardrobe window for years.

Any recollections about the Sneakin' Sally and Double Fun sessions?

First time I worked with Robert was on Sneakin' Sally - great tracking in New Orleans with The Meters and Lowell George, Island Mobile Studio at my house in Sussex for overdubs - vocals out doors. Mixed at Basing Street. Fast and great fun. Double fun less so - heavy New York session scene, costly, did not think the songs were quite there.... Lovely guy to work with, humorous, sharp, dedicated.... check out AWSR? for Robert Palmer chapters.

Vocals outside?

What was that like to do?

Zero early reflections I imagine, did it give an unusually dry sound?

I discovered the wonders of recording outdoors with Robert during Sneakin' Sally' at my house in 1974. We also recorded a great deal 'against' church walls and buildings. Very 'dead' sound - but totally accurate. I love recording outside but it happens rarely these days. We used a U87, through a Urei 1176 (my favourite combination in those days). Plus Pressure Drop was overdubbed at Chris Blackwall's house, we tried to record as much outside as possible - lead vocals, backing vocals, some brass - very 'in-your-face.
