Angry PT with midi/RTAS synths

Same story here

As long as I use my HD 4 / G4 800 Dual with TDM plugins as a recorder/mixer it´s pretty stable.
As soon as I instantiate several Stylus/Atmosphere/Trilogy...etc. as RTAS and record midi into Pro Tools --> I´m having system crashes all the time (yeeez - under OS X) . It´s a complete PITA.

Somebody has similar experience ?

my way of dealing with this is rather simple .... get in and out as fast as you can.

Meaning ... I do all my midi stuff in Protools ... have come to like it and it's all I need. Works fine as long as you use hardware synths and I do use a lot of those.

Soft synths and Samplers however ... especially when using more then one / or rather more then one kind I follow these rules :

1. hit save button on procontrol every 15 seconds

2. program midi and record to audio ASAP and get rid of the synth plugin ASAP

3. rename sessions every 30 minute ... arr 01 / arr 02 / arr 03 etc etc ...

4. hit save button on the procontrol every 15 seconds

5; with machfive ... use it to browse sample library which is realy cool ... do my thing and get the hell out of there and loose the plugin ASAP

6. did I mention save session every 15 seconds yet ?

I'm quite satisfied with the tools I have at hand. And my habbits in using them work fine for me while waiting for improvements ... But whenever someone mentions native is the future to me I kinda think by myself ... 'sure ... we'll be all mixing ITB and SSL and Neve's will only be found in historical museums before that will happen'.

Same thing here. Using my PT HD3 / G4 Dual 1.42 / OS-X for audio and midi w/external synths is stable as a rock. When it comes to soft synths and RTAS/HDTM instruments........all kind of strange things happen. I´m using Stylus, Garritan Personal Orchestra, B4 and Groove Agent (GA under VST-Wrapper).

I second Mr. Lambrechts point. I´ll just want to add that I find the RTAS versions of softsynths more stable than their HDTM counterpart.

I used to think of PT as the most stable piece of software out there. I´ve just recently begun using PT with softsynths (been using a dedicated PC for GigaSampler and VST-instruments, along with external hardware synths and samplers....remember those...), and I must say the experience has been a mixed bag.

Now, I don´t want to go the Logic way. I still prefer keeping audio + midi in the same app. Anyone know if Digidesign has any plans of making softsynths more stable? Repeated questions on the DUC about this matter remains unanswered.

I also have weird bugs at 5.1.3/Os 9.2 with mix plus + dspfarm. Some peolle suggetsed it would be an mtp av usb bug. Man, it is a PITA, having to engage/disengage midi thru, change output assignment so as to see things doing fine, all no sense.
Does traction work with PT?
I hope that the midi things with 6.x/Os x is far better, a leap for next year only probably along with HD2 Accel.

Sorry to breake it to you Alécio, things are way worse in PT 6. The functionality is better, but the stability is REAL BAD!
But I also find that RTAS is more stabile than HTDM.

So what can we do as to have a nice midi stability but without jumping to Logic?
:)

You seem to have a way with Norwegians, Alécio

Even if the stability of PT6/OS-X and softsynths is questionable, I find the midi timing to be a real improvement from the days of OS9/OMS, especially when using a Digi MIDI I/O and its timestamping feature. This goes for hardware synths only, of course. I have not done any scientific tests on PT timing with softsynths.

PT 6.4 has just been released, but I don´t think they´ve done any improvements regarding MIDI; there is no mentioning about it in their list of improvements for 6.4. We´ll see when it arrives...maybe Charles can give us some info on this matter?

Mr. Costa: do you have the USB or Serial MTP AV?

Just out of curiosity: I have the serial version, and wonder if I still can use it when I switch to OSX (next month)?

regards,
