Analog??

Hi Charles,

I have read all the HDL articles and I have found them very helpfull!!I must say thet I am not a Protools user but a Dp instead.Well the tricks are common from every platform right?
I haven't understand these :
1)Are you using the DL and reverb in serial?Or you use the aux on the DL buss to blend some reverb in it?
2) Would you please explain how the drum submix trick can be done in DP?
3)I own a Hedd 192.Should I use it as you use the AC in the mix buss during the mix?Could you post some settings with HEDD for nice analog console emulation?
4) Why my reverbs are getting lost in the mix?

Thank you very much!!

Thanks. I'll answer your questions soon, but can you post a mix so I can here how your verb is getting lost?

Thanks.

Re: Analog??

Yiannis,

Thank you + I'm glad I could be helpful. From the beginning that was my goal. And I specifically wrote Hard Disk Life so that users of other platforms could also learn something.

I'm don't have a lot of experience w/ DP, but I'll try to clear up the questions you had from the column as best I can:

1) Are you using the DL and reverb in serial?Or you use the aux on the DL buss to blend some reverb in it?

I use an Aux on the delay return.

2) Would you please explain how the drum submix trick can be done in DP?

Do you know the name of the DP equivalent to PT's Aux Inputs? (I'm sorry I don't) Nonetheless, they are a fader or channel with no audio track, just an input + an output. (Just like the kind we use for reverb + delay returns). If you have this type of fader and the necessary plugs you should be set. Does this make sense?

3) I own a Hedd 192.Should I use it as you use the AC in the mix buss during the mix?Could you post some settings with HEDD for nice analog console emulation?

I don't have a HEDD, but as I understand it the sounds that it emulates are triode, pentode + tape. I use Analog Channel AC-1 for solid-state analog console emulation. So, you could use your HEDD, but it won't be trying to do exactly the same thing that AC-1 does.

4) Why my reverbs are getting lost in the mix?

Please, tell me more about them. Are they a plug-ins? What kinds are they? What type of reverbs (plate, room, hall, etc.)? Are you processing them in any way before it returns to your mix bus (EQ, compression, filtering)? Answer these question please, so I can help you better.

I hope I've been able to help a little bit.

Charles,
Thank you very much for your reply!

About my verbs , I use mostly the Altiverb then Waves Ren-Trueverb and Realverb.
I use Ambience for drums mostly and to give some space to the other elements in the mix.
I also use a small plate a medium one and maby a hall.Thats all!
About processing.no I don't use any, only at the vocal verb i use an eq to take some 200-400 out so the verb doesn't sound cloudy when the singer sings soflty or at a low register.
Should I treat my returns different?
About posting a mix,how do I do that?could I sent it to you only?

Than you for your time Charles!

Yiannis,

Why don't you post an mp3 (192kbps) of one of your mixes so I can hear what your talking about?

Thanks.
