Kill Your Friends

I'm reading a really funny book Shirley recommended by John Niven, called KILL YOUR FRIENDS. It's a scathing, wicked satire of the music industry...written with an insider's eye...and of course it's fiction, right?

The quote on page one is by Hunter S. Thompson:

The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.

That quote is hilarious, and a bit scary for a 20 year old songwriter

I just signed up to this forum. I was watching Butch Vig on VH1 Classic on demand..Nirvana's Nevermind. Must have saw it like 5 times. Can't believe Butch Vig is answering questions on here...this is so awesome.

First time I saw this quote, "music" was replaced with "television". It was on the door of an edit suite at the station I was working at. Seems like any industry that requires faders or buttons at some point in the chain relates to his words! Hunter was a great writer.

That's such a great quote. Someone had it as part of his signature on here for awhile but I can't remember who.

I was laughing when I saw the shades they had on the baby in the current movie hangover. I wondered how many people caught the Fear and Loathing reference.

haha it's funny when you've never heard something before then you hear it twice in one week... Bruce Willis uses the same quote in "What Just Happened" while giving a eulogy.

will have to check out the book thanks

Yes it's a GREAT quote, and you could swap "music" with just about anything where corporate greed is involved: film industry, TV, wall street, health insurance...you name it!

I have had that quote on my myspace page for quite some time. Gotta' love Hunter (especially when unleashed on the city of Aspen).

This quote is frequently and erroneously attributed to HST. The actual quote, about television, is from Generation of Swine: Tales of Shame and Degradation in the '80s (New York: Summit Books, 1988., p.43.)
"The TV business is uglier than most things. It is normally perceived as some kind of cruel and shallow money trench through the heart of the journalism industry, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs, for no good reason."
He could have just as easily been talking about the music industry.

(moderator note: I think Hunter must have given it an irony tweak then...! - Jules)

" Bear Eat CD..."

Stellfox.. what a visionary. I'm sure he is an amalgam of characters However I am even more sure since tha book came out others have tried to live the dream as much as he.

Well I guess Hunter did his own thing with it, right! Who ever came up with it hit the nail on the head!

Shirley's Book Club

Like Oprah......Maybe Shirley and BV should start a "Book Club" thread here on Gearslutz. I needed a book for my upcoming July 4th vacation week -- just bought the book on Amazon. I'm sure sales are a "jumpin" on Shirley's/BV's recommendation.

"When the going gets wierd. The weird turn pro."

That's my fave Hunter S. Thompson quote...but the music industry one...pretty darn accurate unfortunately. Though, if it wasn't fraught with peril would it be quite as enticing? Sometimes I think part of the lure of starving for your art is the long and winding journey to success.

The other poster had the quote right, but the information a little bit foggy.

Generation of Swine was written by Hunter S. Thompson, so the quote about TV was written by him.

(God bless Hunter ST - we are still debating him after he has gone. Jules - GS admin)

Yes, the original quote is from Generation Of Swine; he re-worked it slightly for a piece that appeared in Rolling stone or Playboy, forget which-still applies for the entertainment industry in general, IMO.
