Talking New RTAS/TDM Distortion Plug-In

Hola,

Got a new plug here: http://www.masseyplugins.com/thc.html

It's a simple, straight-up distortion process and not intended to be a full amp modeling suite like some of the other plug-ins out there. But, as you can hear in the audio samples, I also managed to get a decent amp tone out of it with some addition EQ'ing and compression.

And, I apologize in advance to those used to the really low CPU/DSP usage of my previous plugs. Relatively, this one's a hog! The code is pretty well optimized. Getting decent "un-digital" distortion is just expensive. (The MacTel version should be available shortly.)

Enjoy,
Steve

PLEASE don't tempt the RND vampires. I live in the same city as Steve, so I'll be the one to dig a moat around his house and fill it with holywater, setup crucifixes and hang garlands of garlic from all doors and windows...

Meanwhile, I have a good feeling about this plug-in, without even having tried it yet.

Hi Steve,
Can't wait for the Intel version of your new plug...
BTW, I noticed you're adding audiosuite support for the full version of THC.
That's great! We need this for your other plugs too, especially the 2007.
Here's why: I often do 2 track recordings of live shows for clients that want the recording the same night or day after. The only way to do a quick mastering in PT is to apply Audiosuite then use "export files as", otherwise it has to be done in realtime...
Audiosuite for the 2007 would be a great time saver!

Thanks again for the good work,

Steve you rule!

Sounds Great

Just spiced up a limp repeating/motif/lead section..gave the sucker some real "Zing" but still lives in the mix perfectly

Please keep them coming

Do the feedback control options on the full version add something extra cool? What do they do exactly?

I like THC, but I also like Sansamp, and I don't use it much except to sketch out a quick guitar idea. This plug is kind of in the same vein. Maybe I'll find it more useful for all the stuff I want Sansamp to do but it can't (like make a vocal get gritty and nasty without sounding like it's a distorted guitar).

THC does sound more like a real stompbox than any comparable plug-in I've tried. I don't know how it was achieved, but it worked.

p.s. - Steve, the metal button shoud DO SOMETHING when you click it!

lol

I still need the wow factor to wear off some, but this plug-in might be the best distortion plug-in I've used. I used it on a direct bass track, and the distortion was as smooth as silk. I automated the filter control to sweep up and down for one part of the song, and the result was perfect!!!

The feedback control is awesome. The transport link to the feedback supression is a great addition. It's also nice to have tons of gain and zero feedback and noise if that's what you want.

One more thing, thanks for including an Audio Suite version!!! I often process bass and guitar tracks with the BF Sans Amp plug-in to reserve the CPU power, and this one can be used the same way.

I agree with the previous post about the silver stomp box switch, maybe a master bypass or a filter sweep or something. Not that this mattters anyway.

Massey plug-ins rule!!!!

So the feedback control is like the feedback you can get from an amp, or is it something else? I'm still on the demo version which doesn't have the feedback controls.

The way you guys are using THC gives me some fresh ideas. I might just have to plop down the small fee and stop my whining. I love all the other Massey plug-ins!

Hey all,

Looks like we lost a few posts in this thread when the board went down. To reiterate... the tape delay plug is still under development. And, the latest full version of the limiter added Audiosuite support. So, make sure you're up to date. (Contact me on email if you need your download details again.) I hope to update all the plugs with AudioSuite over time.

The feedback is recreating what the real box often does just sitting there. At high gain levels, it starts to feedback on itself, internally. It adds a particular resonance to the distortion quality. But, without audio passing through it, this harmonic tone can get annoying pretty quickly! So, with the extra control you can optionally "suppress" the feedback all the time or when just when playback/record is stopped.

I know, I know! I got lazy with the bypass button. I'll "fix" that in a later update

Steve

RoundBadge, very interesting idea about the parallel mix-buss processing! I'll have to get that a try.

I don't know if this has already been stated, but I'll cast my vote for Massey plugins having some of the best GUI's in the business. Simple solid lines, easy control, with a dash of organic texture - but not in efforts to visually emulate any specific "vintage" gear. Kudos, Steve.

slightly OT

Just wanted to mention: I noticed last night when I experimented with vt3 (for chits and gigas) strapped across the main mix - it is adding something in the low end even with no adjustments made to the plug-in. You can check this by clicking the bypass in and out. I didn't notice this before putting vt3 on a more complex source like a full mix. I don't have a point, just found it interesting. Vt3 is not meant to be neutral anyway.

Then I boosted the mid some, and it made the distorted guitars bark like a miffed labrador retriever (no, not quite a pit-bull, but a pissed of lab is actually pretty scary when you think about it). So I made an vt3 aux for the dist. gtrs, which already had some vt3 on them, put some of that magic mid on it, and was able to lower the gtrs in the mix. Now they have enough bark without having to bite in the HF area so they could be lowered in the track. Exactly what I was after.

I'm going to get even more off topic and ask why there isn't an RTAS - AU adapter??!?!

This is torture for us non-PT users. We all want massey stuff!

Hell, i'll pay in advance if you'll develop them.

Digidesign would NEVER allow an Rtas to AU adapter. There would go half their business.

That being said, I can't wait until (if) these are ported to Au/universal binary. That would be the best thing to happen to the plugin world in a long time.

On one hand, I can certainly sympathize with the approach of "Hey, I can't hear any difference, so why should I pay that much?". On the other, I wonder why anyone who can't hear a difference is recording, mixing, or producing records.
