i thought the duo's were 64bit? and it's OSX + the apps that determine what to run at? i guess it's the NEXT version of OSX that will be 64bit but as far as i know the chips are ready...now.

there was a sound on sound bit about it in apple notes. i could of course have totally misunderstood it. sometimes i read the magazines backwards.

The woodcrest processors for intel are supposed to be 64 bit. The new macbooks/pros are supposed to have these 64 bit processors in them.

The towers are 64-bit Xeon. Core Duo has no 64-bit support. When I checked a while back, the Core 2 64-bit chip was just starting to ship.

the new MBP are indeed 64 bit since they are using the Core 2 Duo processors and they max out at 3 GB Ram (another indicator).

Best regards,

Simone Coen

OK, I stand corrected. I didn't see the "2" in Core 2 Duo. Funny, you'd think Apple would make a bigger deal out of it. Is there a reason that they're not advertising it as 64-bit?

Is there full OSX support for 64-bit yet? I didn't think so, and if that's the case, then maybe that's why? Or, it's too much of a techy topic, there's no immediate benefit to the average consumer they could market in the typical simple, easy to understand, Apple way?

The new Core 2 Duo ( Merom) based MacBook Pro are 64 bit.

The primary benefit of 64 bit processing is to be able to address more than 4 GB RAM.

At the moment this new release adds firmware support for 3 GB RAM.
1 single 1 GB stick and 1 Single 2 GB stick in two slots.

It won't be long until the next revision allows for 4 GB, however anyone needing that much RAM
in a notebook will probably paying a tremendous price for single 2 GB DIMMS.

For now the major plus for this upgrade is the standard 2 GB RAM in the upgrade model
along with much larger perpendicular hard drives and processing speeds of 2.33 GHz.

While this looks like a strong upgrade, there really won't be any major improvements to notebooks
until the Intel Penryn 45nm chips make their debut some time next year.

The next scheduled upgrade will be the Santa Rosa chips spring of 2007 and will probably
be available once the OSX Leopard machines come to market.

New computers are always fun (especially Macs), but it seems like almost right after you purchase it...something better comes out weeks later, lol.
