Thumbs up Great News For MXL 603 Owners

I just talked to Wayne at MXL and he gave me the green light to announce this:

You can now buy 604 omni capsules for your MXL 603/991 !!! That's right, the MXL 604 capsule fits the 603/991 perfectly and gives you a flat, low noise omni that eliminates the 7KHz peak that some people find a little bright.

(I've been bugging MXL for months to make the 604 omni capsules available to people that already own the MXL 603/991, and they finally did it.) But the really exciting part is the price. Get this:

You can buy a matched pair of omni capsules (in a nice metal presentation box) for only....

....$49.95 - for the pair. Less than $25 bucks each

And they're already in stock at most MXL dealers. That is one hell of a deal.

LATE BREAKING NEWS

I didn't know about the omni pair being available till this morning, when I talked to Wayne, but last week, I had ordered a pair of omni capsules from them, and UPS just showed up as I was typing this. Here's the first pic of the new omni capsules (and the box) for the 603/991:

Some manufacturers would charge you $50 for the box. Killer! We're so buying a whole bunch of these! I've never minded the upper mid bump on the sources I use a 603 for, but having a new color will be wonderful.

Anyone use spaced 604's on piano? Any good?

FYI since you asked I'm telling: we sell MXL but this particular product isn't on the site yet.

No Harvey, in fact the first I heard of these is your posts all over the web so...you've replaced our rep entirely!

I have contacted our rep about getting them in, pricing etc.

Wow--at AES last year my buddy and I spoke with Scott from MXL and told him that a nice storage box with omni capsules would be the perfrect accessory for 603 owners. Scott was like "really?...hmm...yeah that's a good idea...I'll have to see what we can do."

About time.

I used a single 604 with omni on an upright piano. But it was miked from a distance as we were going for a roomy vibe. I think I used an A Designs Pacifica or P1. I can't remember. Here's a clip, but fast forward to the end of the song to hear the 604 on a real piano. The rest of the song is a Nord Electro.

I appreciate your post, but no offense... that's not exactly the type of piano sound I usually go for

Very cool sound though... especially for that track.

After I posted the clip I realized that was really an awful example, especially since I recall running the track through a Distressor on Nuke. Doh! Regardless the 604 omni caps are nice.

It was already in the works by then. They were waiting till the sales of the new 604's leveled off. When I saw the 604's roll out at the L.A. AES the year before, I mentioned it would be a great 603 add-on to Wayne, but he was afraid it would cut into the new 604 sales.

Several people have reported having problems getting these from their usual dealers. If you're having problems, try calling MXL at 1-800-800-6608 to find out who has them in stock. I'll bet Warren will have them at Front End Audio pretty damn quick.

Harvey, thanks to your detective work I have multiple pairs of capsules on the way.

Also, the rep told me MXL is reporting to have sold about 50,000 603 microphones over the years...that's a lot of people who are going to be very happy to find they can get 2 omni caps and case for $49.95!!!

pmdundee, they will be here in a few days.

Not to take any business away from War, but for those of you who just can't wait...

I picked up a pair at my local GC yesterday.

Haven't had a chance to try them out yet, but they look awful pretty in their case.

69 Sound, you're simply sharing that your local GC has the capsules in stock. Just like I'm not telling anybody they gotta buy from me (we haven't sold one pair actually) you're not telling anybody what they have to do. Don't feel bad about sharing info like that on these boards!

War

PS: How do you mean they look awful, like the case sucks?

I hear ya... Not so much feeling bad.

Well, maybe just a little guilty for still supporting corpoorate GC when there is such a great network of dealers here on the forum!! (But that's a whole other thread in itself)

Yeah, I'll admit that GC is convienent for certian things. It's just I'd much rather see the smaller local shops and dealers here get the benefit of the business.

You guys all offer a wealth of information and support that you just don't get walking into your local big box store. Not too mention your usually among the first to offer up real world reviews.

And that's something you just can't put a price on!!

So I'll say it now... Anybody who's intersted in the 603/604 omni capsules be sure to order from War or one of the other great dealers here.

Chris

btw - The capsules look great!! What I actually meant was I haven't had a chance to put them through their paces yet, but they sure do look good sitting there all shiny and new.

Freq Response?

Anybody know where to find a frequency response chart for these puppies? The 604 page on the MXL website seems to only have one chart, though there might be a second line on it--way too hard to tell.

If not, does anybody that's picked up a set care to comment on the differences between these and stock cardioids?

Thanks!
Eric

I would assume it's pretty flat, as are most omnis.

I got the caps a few weeks ago, but I haven't had the opportunity to try them out yet. I'll have some downtime early next week, hopefully I'll be able to comment then.

Just got a chance to swap out the cap and try the omni 603 on acoustic guitar.

It sounded great! That 7K thing definately dissapeared...very neutral and organic-sounding by comparison. I was very pleased with the sound.

It needs a BUTTLOAD of gain (66dB was barely enough for a picked guitar part about 2 feet above the players head, and I would've liked more gain on it.) I must have put it on the one that is about 10dB quieter than the other one out of my "matched" pair.

I'm excited to try them out on different sources now. I'll do drums next.

Thanks for the caps, Warren!

Thanks for the update, Alexlakis. 66dB though is kind of frightening. I don't recall ever having to use that much gain on my set. Perhaps I should also investigate their "matchedness" since mine were not bought as a matched pair. That 10dB difference on yours is ridiculous!

Yeah, obviously, their "matchedness" is non-existant!

The two never matched up outta the box. It never bothered me, tho, as I'm not one of those guys who must work with matched pairs. I just always turned the gain up on one a bit more.

But, yeah, 66dB of gain, and I still had PLENTY of headroom. It was a quiet guitar part, but it's not like it was soft finger-picking or anything. Regular-strength picking with the mic 2 feet above his head. Martin D-15, gauge 13 bronze strings...

Oh well, I didn't mind; The track turned out great! I've got a hankerin' to try the 603s out on more stuff now; These new caps have definately renewed my interest in them.
