Waves REDD

it's here:

"London's Abbey Road Studios were at the epicenter of a seismic shift that rocked the world of music during the 1960s, and changed the course of popular culture forever. The Beatles, The Hollies, Pink Floyd and countless other luminaries made musical history at Abbey Road Studios, trailblazing a revolution that resonates to this day.
And at the heart of it all: The REDD consoles, custom-designed, built by and named for Abbey Road Studios' in-house Record Engineering Development Department. Renowned for their silky smooth EQ curves, extraordinary warmth and lush stereo imagery, there’s something magical about the REDDs that sound like no other console."

I'm curious to see how (or IF) this adds to the NLS, Slate VCC, or even the HLS Channel.
It's an interesting concept, and I'll be trying out the demo this week.

Would love to hear everyone else's opinions on it...

Just by looking at it there's much more features than any of the previous console emu's.

Interesting plugin. Checking it out now. As always with Waves, I had to poke around to see under which classification this appears. It is sometimes arbitrary. In Cubase, NLS appears under "Distortion". You can find this under "Channel Strip."

Except for the added features what's the difference between this and the NLS EMI?

The EMI is a TG console, no?

This is a REDD console. Different beasts entirely.

the NLS emulations is of mike hedges EMI TG12345 mk4 console. The REDD and the TG consoles are completely different. REDD is tube circuitry and TG was transistor. They both were a part of abbey road and EMI but when I think REDD i think 60s and when i think TG i think 70s.

So is this a console emulation or a channel strip? I ask because I don't see a mix bus plugin anywhere. Am I missing something?

Trying it now... the 'drive' knob is interesting, it seems to limit the headroom of the plugin (much like the 'headroom' and 'saturation' knobs on the Kush UBK-1). It drives more than the NLS - and while the maximum setting is too much, a bit of that edge can be quite useful.

The plugin definitely has a nice sound, but I wonder if it won't be too much on almost all instruments in a large mix. The VCC is better in this regard, I think, because it has a more subtle effect.
If both plugins are in 'neutral', I think the VCC also preserves the transients a bit better. But then it doesn't have the extra features that can be so much fun!

Oh, and it's CPU hungry. I like how it sounds, but may need to be employed with caution...

I'll try it on a couple of mixes I'm working on at the moment.

Any other users wanting to share their first experiences?

I'll side with Cubase on this one - it puts the plugin under 'Channel Strip', and it seems appropriate sound-wise.

Will definately check these out..., though I wish they would have simplified/streamlined the interface. Possibly splitting this up into multiple plugs as opposed to the channel strip approach. That's what I love so much about VCC. It just get's straight to the point without tacking on anything extra.

Maybe it's just me, but I hear far less immediate color than NLS offers (imposes). When loading any of the NLS models the color is immediately obvious. Having fun for sure.

what does it do to the sound, add warmth, change transients ? Being a 60s emu does it actually suite modern/urban music? The NLS actually complements more modern music (especially the spike emu).

What genre would you immediately think NOT to use it on?

Reserving judgement until I do a full mix through it. But it sure looks pretty and I love older console emulations.

Yep, gonna give it a try tomorrow but from what I've seen CPU is worrying me...

It's sort of a bummer when a console emu is cpu heavy, since the proper way to use it (assuming you were wanting to emulate the process of mixing on one of the REDD boards) would be to have it everywhere.

I haven't tried it yet through, so hopefully the cpu usage has been exaggerated.
