Very interesting, and I wonder how the capsules compare to the rectangular Milab capsules, which I looove...

Just a little bit of high pass should do the trick. U47's a great mic, but I wouldn't dream of not touching the low end in a modern pop/rock mix.

What do you think is the benefit of 4 rectangular capsules summing to one?

Hey guys...I'm a product manager for Audio Technica. Our method of summing the four diaphragms, quadruples the sensitivity, while only doubling the self noise; which is still less than 5 dB. BTW...we had a production house in Atlanta do the video. Not sure what microphone they used, but it wasn't the AT5040.

I've a few AT mics and I really love them.

I can't wait to check this one out in person!!

No high pass filter though?

Interesting design, but none of this means much to me until I sing into the microphone to hear how it sounds.

Self noise wouldn't be my biggest concern for a vocal microphone, some of the best sounding vocal microphones I've used are actually quite noisy.

The coverage area of the capsule is 2x the area of a 1' capsule. Like the size of a very large capsule but the transient & hi end response of a smaller one.

Would love to hear some clips of this unit ! I have quite a few AT mics that I really enjoy using . The slight low end boost on the mic looks like it would be great for a room mic as well .

I wonder how it compares to the Brauner mic's then.

Yeah Brauner is the only other company doing all original designs for high end studio mics.

Looks really nice!
The four combined rectangular diaphragm design is very interesting.

Kind of a combination of the swedish Pearl's (PML) and Milab's rectangular diaphragms, which I believe have been around since the 60's - and on the other hand the combined 3-capsule design from swedish Line Audio Design, which also has been around for many years.

It's a bit strange though, that the rectangular design hasn't been adopted by more manufacturers until now...

I really like Brauners, but they aren't the craziest concepts out there, really.

Pearl
Soundfield
JZ

If you look around, there are a few.

Bock Audio Designs 507, CharterOak, Lauten Audio, Milab Microphones, Sanken, DPA, Earthworks, Josephson and many others offer mics with different approaches, different than the norm "me-too" mics.

$3k...one pattern? No thanks. I know...cardioid is the most used vocal pattern...but, still...you're gonna make some kind of innovative new design mic JUST for vocals? It BETTER have a negative feedback circuit. Does it? Bet not.

Funny, I sold the 4060 because it was only cardioid. I'd love to have a pair of those that were multipattern. I'd have even thought a multipattern 4033 would be useful.

Cardioid only..."vocal mic"...big bump down low....coming in right at that street price threshold for "what's the best vocal mic for $2k"...can anyone say "noob home studio market"? I'm getting cynical, I know. But, the forces driving the audio market are no longer the voices of experience.

What justification do have to determine the need for one and the lack of one?

Love how the guts look and I expect excellent sound but I hate how the shockmount looks. Why can't audio technica just give us a normal old spider style shock mount instead of the crazy rope bondage hoops on the 2/4 series or this '50s robot contraption.

We all know most of us buy mics to look at more than record with.

I'm not an electrical engineer but you'd think with a diaphram the size of a slice of bread the applications of this mic are going to be pretty vocally-biased anyway.

We used the first prototype of what is now the 5040 for many of the backing vocals on my band's record (linked below). It was a prototype, so I'm not sure what AT has changed since last summer, but initial impressions were favorable. It sounded very good, and perhaps a little bit darker than the 67 we compared it to.

That said, we went with the original vintage tube mics (Neumann and a modified Gefell, I think) for most of the leads.

The shockmount is ridiculously cool. Wait till you actually get to play with it in person...

I'm wondering what other types of mics will be added to the 50 series. I understand it's going to be released in January

It will be interesting to see what else they have in this series, but the price at the moment is an issue. I agree that 3k in the UK for a one patterned Mic is pretty steep.

I'll be intrigued by the off axis response of this design...

Glad to see AT pushing new ideas through in this climate, Kudos.
