sanken HAD-48 ribbon/dynamic mic pre

anybody check this out... probably the most interesting thing i've seen in mic pre technology, in years!

Quote:
As everyone knows, dynamic microphone has lower output level compare to condenser microphone. When you use a dynamic microphone and had to have quite long cable to the microphone input of a mixer, may be everyone had experience to have noise from long distance cable.
Sanken HAD-48 is designed to increase its level 20dB or 40dB to achieve better signal to noise ratio even using long microphone cable from a dynamic microphone. It has +20, +40 switch to select its gain. It's only 105.3mm length XLR-M XLR-F tube, and driven by normal 48V phantom. And consumption currency is only 3mA or less.
You can get rich and powerful signal from a dynamic microphone even through long cable by using HAD-48 in clean signal to noise ratio.

Not a bad idea - did anybody check it out already? How does the thing sound? THIS would be an ideal occasion for the straight wire with gain. How far do you get, signal-wise with 48V/3mA? Can someone do the math for me? Although I am worried about a unhealthy share of mixers NOT delivering full 48 volts - especially when you plug in more than one thing that needs phantom power.

So you have to feed these little suckers 48v? It shure would be weird hooking this up to a ribbon, mic then telling someone to hit the phantom switch.

I wonder which one is better quality, the Sanken or the Rode?

I don't have many problems getting my ribbons enough gain, especially with the TG-2 or UA 2108 that I usually put my ribbons through. This would be cool with the Mercury M72 I have, giving ribbons a bit more jam. Interesting.

RODE's response to me in an email:

Both the D-Power and D-Power Plug do not pass the 48v signal through to the microphone therefore it is safe to use with a Ribbon Mic that does not require phantom power.

...which is what I suspected.

I just ordered the Rode D-PowerPlug from L&M; it should be here in week or so. I'm cautiously optimistic about this as I wasn't getting enough quiet gain out of my pre's for my R92 for anything except elec gtr. Besides the gain I like the fact that it has a 100 kOhm input impedance which should be ideal for ribbons. At the very least hopefully it'll buy me some time until the AEA TRP comes out and if it allows me to use ribbons and dynamics with the Germanium on quiet sources then it'll be awesome. Ayway I'll report back when I've tried it out if anyone's interested.

Craig.

I don't know any of these products, but judging from both companies history i won't be surprised if the sanken is much much better quality. Sanken make some of the best microphones ever made and known for 100% no compromises in quality (and therefore also in price ) and rode is after all a budget company to sell mainly for the home studio recordist...

Sorry to bring an old thread up, but did anyone used the Sanken HAD-48 or even compared to the Rode one?
Also do you know how much is it in Europe?
I am possibly looking for a pair of those to feed a B&O BM5 stereo ribbon.
Thanks a lot.

I have several of both of them.

Each are similar, the Sanken sounds a little less noisy. They are both well made.

Both are simply a stage of amplification and may be useful for long lines where high loss is a problem.

Rode also sells the amp as a bare module complete with XLR pins on the board that you can slide into your stage dynamic if you need the gain. This is a handy thing for that EV635 that you need to run 200 feet from the truck. In the past, you used a Shure line amp and a 9V battery. This is much easier and less expensive.

Neither have an edge over good cable and a low noise preamp for shorter runs.
