New Pro Tools Keyboard

I don't know if someone posted this already, but this is good news to me.

It's a standard Apple Mac Keyboard with PT keys, but instead of $250 the new one is $119.

I know it's gotta cost something, and that sounds better to me. The old one was a Macally keyboard which regularly sold for $30.

Hey Max.

Thanks for the heads-up, but have you tried the official PT Keyboard Stickers? They're only $15. It did take some patience and some tweezers to get them on my keyboard, but it looks great. Actually it looks almost exactly like the photo of their new Mac keyboard, minus each entire key having color, and it only cost me the additional $15 and about 45min.

Yeah its been out for a while. Much nicer aesthetically than the macally job & cheaper as well.

I use the wireless version. No major complaints although the coloured keys are just the original white keys painted over as opposed to replacement coloured plastic keys. This means that the keys that remain white are glossy & flat while the keys that have been painted are matt & have a slightly chalky texture.

Still, I like it & it has sped up my editing no end & I suppose that is the important thing.

Alas, no Bluetooth version.

(Did I actually say 'Alas'?)

Also I bought directly from the manufacturer, Logic Keyboard. They have been doing next day delivery for a couple of months now whereas there seems to be a 1 month wait in the Avidstore (in the UK at least).

They will also just sell you the coloured key caps if you just want to modify your existing keyboard. This makes it MUCH cheaper.

Oofff, I hate those stickers. All those little corners sticking up totally throw off my typing. and it just feels unpleasant- not something I want to deal with when I'm cranking away on PT for 10 or 12 hours a day.

Ha! Sounds like you've had a miserable time with them, sorry. Mine haven't been a problem at all. No "corners" that you speak of. Like I said, it took a little time to get things straight, but its looks great and there have been no issues of any kind. Had you cleaned off the keyboard as suggested in the instructions that came with the stickers? I'd actually have a difficult time trying to get them off at this point.

Sounds like you're a prime candidate for this new keyboard.

Nah, I don't have them on mine, but I come across them sometimes on other systems- like the one I'm working on now, I had to get the engineering department to bring me an un-stickered keyboard. The one that was here when I started on this film was just awful.
I've spent so much time on PT I really don't need to look at the keyboard anymore, anyhoo.

i had the stickers for a while now and i must say, it was a blessing at the begging but now they started to get al gluey , black and just fading out from so much usage. and looks it be a pain to clean up and add other stickers.

but sure beats spending $120 keyboard

Yeah, I've been aware of the stickers, but I'm one of those hopelessly obsessive people, if you know what I mean.

I think I'd prefer to just buy the keys. I keep my desk area beverage-friendly; the only thing I lose is lots of keyboards... I think three or four last year. Even at the new lower price, it could get expensive.

Thanks for the heads up!

And I gotta say one thing for Digi... I'm sure they've heard complaints about the $250 Macally keyboard they used to have... so they actually did something about it. Maybe it shows they will listen after all!

I hade one in daily use for 26 months Zero Problems. I also have a Bluetooth Logic KB for the LE rig. I like the big keys on the old one better. ( Once again Vintage wins over LOL)

I actually had the Macally, but not the digi version; it was easier to type on because it gives a little "click" feel to each keystroke. I just couldn't have a $250 keyboard because I go thru two or three a year due to my morning coffee.

Good gawd. I'm sure it's a great convenience, but could it be any more 80's-Miami-Vice-looking?

I'd pay more for a black one. .. Hell, even leave the lame-o pastel colors, but at least let the rest of the keys be black.. None more black. This is one of the great things about my old G4's keyboard. Blackness. Nice. .. Non-glaring. ..

Sorry to revive this old thread, but I have a question for all you slutz that use the new keyboards and/or stickers regularly. We have the old Macally here, and one thing that drives me nuts when I'm actually trying to type is that the index markers on the "j" and "f" are not there, so that if I don't pay attention, my fingers start in the wrong place to type. Is is better with the new keyboard? Better yet, can I still feel those index dots with the stickers on? I know it's less elegant than having a whole new keyboard for PT, but actually, I have a spare one, so I guess I could put stickers on it if it solved the problem. Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Cheers!

Samson
