I completely agree with joes philosophy what I meant was that whilst he was A/B ing there could of been shots of the gain reduction meters so we could see "to get from the original sound to this one theres blah blah gain reduction goin on" etc the photos are great but because they are static pictures G.R Isn't shot its no biggie over all very pleased

We didn't think of it at the time. But, we'll file that away for future work.
Thanks

They're by a pretty well known portrait artist in San Franciso. Oil paint on wood.
I wanted something unique and "analog" like Joe. IMHO, they could
hang somewhere, someday.
Not for everybody, but I hope people
can see them "for real" someday.
We're so used to seeing Photoshop :-(

This video is a lot of fun even for gearheads that might already be familiar with all the gear and techniques that Joe uses. It is still great to take a break from life in our caves and take a look at another cavemans way of working in his. Joe has a knack for keeping things fun and you can tell that he still loves music after all these years. This video gets a big thumbs up from me.

what a great mixing video, amazing job!!! I´ll be watching the video again later.
It´s great to have the mixing perspective of Joe.
I have a little question maybe I missed it in the video I don´t know but here it is.
Where does Joe set the gain staging in the SSL, at the Pro Tools output or at the input of the console.

The output of the Studer is split and fed back to the SSL for monitoring.

loved the mixing video. You really do enter into Joe's mix zone. Seems like the sort of guy you want mixing your track. What I got out of it...his subtle ideas and patience all add up in the end to make something special. Whilst I don't own half the gear he uses, it's extremely inspiring. It also takes serious balls to use that much outboard in a mix - he obviously has people's trust and now I understand. |

It seemed like he set the gain stage at the line trim of the console

I'd imagine both. Doing it ITB and on the analog side would satisfy all gain staging properly.

Seriously... I was gonna watch this tonight but I'm heading towards midnight here in sweden...
I'm asking this out of straight interest, not trying to be a prick - what kind of system are you using?
Earlier this evening I bought a download item from Native instruments and recieved my download link within a matter of seconds...
But here I have to wait for hours - according to earlier posts I don't seem to be alone...

? | So. The reason is we watermark the video to cut down on illegal file sharing. The particular software we use only allows one job to be run at a time. And, it can be finicky. Sometimes the processing queue gets stuck and we have to restart it.
We understand the frustration of not getting your order promptly and we hope to address this soon.
Jeff

Someone asked before - and I'm also interestad in this - how loud does he monitor in the studio? Just out of interest...
Some guys like Elliot Scheiner and CLA monitors very softly while Kevin Shirley admits that he monitors really loud.

jeff | Here's what Joe said: "Start out decent volume then mostly low. Occasional check loud again periodically" |

jeff | No biggie, I rewound and watched it again listening intently. Best wait for any other such reports to save you a job just for me.
I enjoyed watching very much, gave me some new concepts to try out.
Who's next on the list for filming?
