I don't want to make an ass out of myself, but I will mention this, I do have VCC and Reelbus, I also have DSM by Proaudio DSP, one of the features of DSM is its ability to capture spectrum of another record and apply it to your mix. Now I did a test by putting my mix through VCC and Reelbus and then applying spectrum of a fantastically mixed record to mine. That record was tracked and mastered to tape, no expense spared. My mix sounded real good to my ears. So like yourself I do not have the absolute need to get VTM, but saying that I do like it a lot.
FWIW, I'm gonna try tweaking ReelBus to see how close I can get to VTM. I'll report back if anyone is interested. Has anyone else tried to do this?
I tried it and i could get close on the buss. But for recording more instruments on to tape setup (like in old days) i think i'll have to correct myself and to say that Slate VTM is pretty much amazing.
Nothing like this VTM (and i had and tried A LOT tape sims).
You know what is great? You can have and use both!!! TB Reelbus is only 15 eur. It will provide you plenty of tapeish color and you can also order VTM and that does it in tape. You simply don't need any other Tape plugin. IMHO of course.
Well I tried Slate's VTM today. No way could I get ReelBus to sound that good. ReelBuss is good (all worth the money and then some) but VTM is in a different league.
This is just unusable on individual tracks. After 12 or so my quad core is hitting over 50% without any other plugin. VTM uses upsampling and is much more cpu efficient.
Too bad....

Very weird. It's not the first time I'm reading this. Not so over here (dual core iMac from 2011 - Not a state of the art computer!)
I can open about 20 and my CPU goes up to 20% or so (and we're talking Ableton Live, which is very CPU unfriendly).
I think Jeroen is not active on GS and guys like you should help him out by reporting him these issues with your specs.
He's very, very responsive and fast at updating his plugins. He can't fix possible issues, if users don't report them
Just crosschecked with UAD Ampex for some hours;
sounds really good, I like the distortion on the TB better, but the UAD is another thing, sounds much more 3D me thinks. However, pretty close and the autogain feature is something really missing on the UAD.
soundwise, the UAD is the winner when it comes to single tracks, on the masterbuss, the differences where more subtle.
When it comes to pricing, the TB wins hands down (!! 10Euros? It's worth so much more!)
GREAT PLUGIN!
Amazing plug, but really really needs an A/B option. Or am i missing something? 2 Instances is fine for now, but this baby sits on my Master and i could use the space.
FYI - Nomad Factory's MAGMA V1.5 (VST, AU, RTAS, AAX) has a VST Chainer that enables loading VST plug-ins in both Pro Tools and Logic Pro: www.nomadfactory.com/products/magma/index.html

check this (it is not nebula but standard DSP) plugin
I think Reelbus is really good, I like it better than VTM, or UAD STUDER for a fraction of the cost, just reduce input level if the effect is too prominent
Great sim but I don't agree that it's the best to date. UAD and Slate IMO still edge it out into a very strong third place

Better depth and sound stage. I always liked the tone on the cdsoundmaster but I like the way the others (particularly the Ampex) make everything wider/deeper. The Slate does truly amazing things to transients vs the Studer which is based on a transformer-less machine so which one I use is dependent on the material

Ok, it's more hardware sentiment towards what tries to mimic and the gui, i get it :D
Might be good to get a few of these next to eachother in a DBT shootout on a mixbuss
When hearing a finished mix, close sounding settings, I'm not too confident that people can still distinguise, but I might be wrong
In general they all sound like a mix of compression, EQ and 3rd order harmonic enhancement/distortion. Under the hood these seem to be the variables they all have to play with. Personally for me not worth playing 10fold for a GUI
Btw the new tapesat in Cubase7 is very good as well.
Not about the GUI or hardware sentiment for that matter. To be honest I've actually been selling most of my hardware (minus my preamps) because of the sounds I can now get ITB (in the process of selling my 4 Distressors and a QURE eq ) and the GUI on the Slate drives me a little nutz, it's just way too big. All decisions have been made by testing comparing and retesting until someone gets my money. Haven't moved from CB6 to 7 yet but plan to soon. Heard very good things about the plugin suite on it
What made you sell your distressors? Tired of the sound? I didn't find a good itb alternative for them yet. Sold them last year, but still sort of miss their sound
