Yes, we can't believe everything we see. Probably not even wise to trust the level matching of plugins we trust. Well, I don't mind so much, level-matching manually is an excellent habit to acquire. I think of it as I do the scientific method in general — a mix engineer should retain the delight of imagination, but every claim is best matched with skepticism. Except in this case, results are not so much peer-reviewed as ear-reviewed.

Cheers.

Don't get me wrong, this plug in sounds amazing, but I think the instant 'betterizer-effect' (for a lack of better word ) that most people experience is due to the slight increase in volume...
You are right about increased volume however there is a drastic change in dynamics, transient handling, frequency spectrum and overall distortion.

Actually it's pretty obvious to hear that.

So no it's not pure betterizer by increased volume (like old UAD pultec plugin for example)..

I will check it out, in the meantime has anybody looked into transient control in Reelbus, does it emulate sound of tape or does it go a step further and somehow manages to reduce transients (like tape does)?

Installed the AU but, everytime you take the plugin off of a channel, Logic Crashes.
I'll wait til they work out the bugs.

Might be helpful if guys like you contact the dev, to report the bugs. He can't fix things he doesn't know about. Just sayin'....

Hi Leo,
yes, same specs here for demoing. Only had one issue so far, when I upsampled one of the plugs (I think while the session was running).
I'll have more info when I get back to my rig for further testing.

I mean how wrong can you go with a 10€ plugin that almost everybody here likes? I also use Jaroen's other plugins regularly, so I know they are great and easily comparable to the "big name" plugins.

Anyways, I did a little comparison between unprocessed sound vs. processed sound and you can hear the results here.

The band playing is my friends band and the "original" file is what we recorded. It is without any processing what so ever. The signal chain is mic-soundcraft 6000-rme multiface-cubase. I didn't apply any processing on the way in.

The second file "reelbus on output" is just that. Same as the original but reelbus on the cubase master output with preset "professional 30".

The 3rd file "reelbus on channels" I applied reelbus on every channel with different presets to give the track a little life.

The 4th file "reelbus on channels+output" is same as previous with added reelbus on output again with "professional 30" preset.

All the channel faders are at 0 on all files so the only thing changing is the reelbus.

Also this is not my mix of the song just the raw files as they were recorded with the whole band playing in the same room at the same time, so don't pay attention to the actual mix!

I really like this plugin and plan to use it a lot in the future. Thanks Jaroen!

WTF?!

I just bought Reelbus and copied the TB_ReelBus.key file in the same folder as TB_ReelBus.dll but it is still in demo mode!!
I tried to reload the plug in, refresh the plug in list, restart my computer, .... still demo mode

I use Cubase 6.0.5 64bit on Windows 7

Nevermind, I had to run Cubase as admin and now it recognises the key file.
Kind of strange anyway, since I now have to reauthorize some of my other plug ins

Anyway, the sound of Reelbus compensates for this hassle....

Bought it.
Can produce a lot of nice sonic option, incl. chorus FXs.
Still not exactly like tape (esp. transients), but it's the most useful tape sim to date IMO.
Really help ITB sound.

Blind test anyone? Three files (Dry, Reelbus & Slate's VTM in random order), plugs on every track and master track. I tried to match output to the peak, not precise match. Which do you prefer?

Thanks for posting the comparison. A has hiss , and thats really all i can tell between them . Thats the reason I'm not going for the VTM. Not a $200 significant benefit. So what are A B and C?

Check this one out, it's a better representation, less hiss on A, RMS more closely matched.

https://docs.google.com/folder/d/0B_...dNZi1EVHM/edit

A is VTM
B is Reelbus
C is Dry

On my tiny computer speakers A seems to have a bit of high end roll off. B and A both sound like an improvement over C to me.

I can hear the slight high end roll off as well on the example A, but I would probably boost the high a bit or use the FG9 tape instead in here - the way VTM glues everything together and brings punch into the bass drum / snare hits is really great.

Wow I surprised myself and picked B without looking at the key list. I thought for sure it must be VTM but it's Reelbus. :-) I even turned down the level on B to see if i still liked it better and I did. I hear more of a 3D effect over all and I really like the way the drums sound hitting Realbus. Very surprised.

I would definitely pick B. Did you use some preset in reelbus? And the song is very, very nice. Still demo?

I took stems from a mixing portal

I used different presets. No Swiss models, hence not much high end roll off. I personally like both plugs.

On master bus I used preset for master bus and on channels I used either medium saturation or hybrid presets and pushed input depending on source. In VTM I can't recall what I used exactly, I think I mostly used 15ips and med bias.

It goes to show that reelbus is top notch. I really want to buy Vtm as I own vcc and fg-x but I just can't . I can't hear a major benefit . Granted I don't have high tech mastering setup. Maybe Vtm stands out in this environment with mastering ears that I don't have.
