Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt Adapter Released

Seagate Starts Selling GoFlex Thunderbolt Adapter for $99

Wanted to post this as it would seem that, when paired with the GoFlex Turbo drive (which runs at 7200RPM) or any other 7200RPM 2.5 hard drive , this would be, at this point, the most affordable Thunderbolt audio-ready drive out at the moment (as pointed out towards the end of this entry, the connection on these GoFlex adapters is just a SATA connection and you can apparently use any compatible drive). 500GB Turbo currently $120 at Best Buy, Adapter @ $99, $50 thunderbolt cable means the total is under $300 - not cheap, but cheaper than the Lacie offerings and forthcoming Elgato SSD offerings. Curious if anyone's used the GoFlex Turbo with the Firewire 800 adapter for audio? Not a Seagate fan in general and usually go with the OWC stuff for external audio drives but I'm assuming if the GoFlex Turbo/Firewire 800 version is workable for decent sized sessions, then it should be smooth sailing with the Thunderbolt adapter.

Ia anyone actually running Pro Tools (or any DAW) of an external drive via Thunderbolt? In particular, a Macbook Air?

If you're using Protools 10 with CPTK2 or an HD license, it shouldn't be a problem running a session off a $2 USB stick any longer.

There's a post by someone on the DUC using thunderbolt on a Mac Air for PT 9 and I would assume that it should be no problem - the bandwidth and read and write times are way beyond firewire 800 (note that the only review of the seagate adapter was done with a 5400RPM drive so the gains over firewire 800 were not as overwhelming as expected). Also, as was pointed out, if you are on PT with the CPTK, you can load entire sessions into RAM, so essentially you can run a session of anything in those circumstances.

There will be firewire adapters for thunderbolt without doubt, but none is available yet.
