State of the plug-in market. Companies see revenue streams drying up for a number of reasons. One big one is today you can get stunning effects plugs by new to the market indy developers who don`t have the overhead. Then you have Apple who sell the full Logic suite for 199€ - because they can.

Hardware world is somewhat immune, somewhat. In the 1's and 0's world it doesn`t work that way. It`s 2012, e-Books, AppStore, and hoards of folks who wake up and realize they already have most of what they need.

UA and Sonnox... put the mask on breath deeply count to ten...gheez, the thought put me to sleep even before I finished the press release.

Any word from NAMM if PowerCore license holders will get a cheap/free crossgrade?

Yeah I agree. Because of the power limitations of the card, I have to save power for the unique plugins. Sonnox plugs are pretty power efficient, there's no reason for an end user to go with the UAD version when the native version is avail. Sonnox benefits from the copy protection, but the user loses out... IMO.

That said.. Sonnox has great plugins, I'm not trying to discourage people from buying them... I just dont understand this angle.

Also, I think it's in the "Pro Tools 10" sub forum, you'll notice there's a poll for users who want Waves to make DSP-based AAX plugs. This also goes to show, even though these users obviously have a powerful system (they'd be using HDX), that depending on what you're doing and how much heavy-lifting you need, DSP is still necessary at this day in age for some users.
Of course those people would want Waves to make DSP-based AAX plugins...if they're using HDX, it's fairly safe to assume they're doing so because they want the DSP (I imagine a small majority would want them simply because of the additional I/O allowed). Many of them are moving over from HD systems, and I know many HD users are waiting to move over to HDX until Waves has DSP AAX versions of the plugins they've already spent a lot of money on available.

Assuming that the purchase of the UAD version of the plugin gives you native capabilities as well, I don't see this as being a bad move for Sonnox or UA...

Official Press Release

Universal Audio (UA), a leading manufacturer of professional audio recording hardware and production software for Mac and PC, is proud to welcome Sonnox as Direct Developers for the UAD-2 Powered Plug-Ins platform. This partnership will bring Sonnox’s award-winning mixing and mastering plug-ins to UAD-2 DSP Accelerator hardware — widely regarded as the best audio production platform in the professional recording industry.

Based in Oxfordshire in the United Kingdom, Sonnox’s uncompromising emphasis on quality, design, and flexibility have made their mixing and mastering plug-ins the tools of choice for quality-conscious sound engineers and producers. With Universal Audio’s software development kit, Sonnox will be able to directly create software for the UAD Powered Plug-Ins platform, and to sell these plug-ins via UA’s online store.

"We're glad to add Sonnox to our growing list of Direct Developers for UAD-2," says Matt Ward, President of Universal Audio. "The clarity and precision that is synonymous with their audio production plug-ins will give our customers unique choices for their music projects."

“We’re excited that Universal Audio chose our award-winning mixing and mastering plug-ins to be added to their UAD-2 platform,” says Rod Densham, Managing Director at Sonnox. “We’re impressed with commitment to the quality of the software available on their platform, and looking forward to including our best plug-ins on UAD-2 in the near future.”
