Press Release

MOTU's Digital Performer 8 has always had a loyal following on the Mac, but we certainly didn't anticipate that it was about to be released for the PC, too.

That's what's happening, though: DP 8 is cross-platform, and boasts new features and an additional 15 plug-ins.

Read on to find out more…

MOTU Digital Performer 8 press release

MOTU has unveiled Digital Performer version 8, a major upgrade to their flagship audio workstation software. Recognized throughout the industry as a leading workstation application for Mac, Digital Performer 8 will now be available for both Mac OS X and Windows 7. During in-booth demos, MOTU debuted other significant new features, including a new video playback engine, Punch Guard™ confidence recording, 14 new user interface themes, and 15 new included plug-ins.

"With a long history of firsts, Digital Performer is widely considered to be a leader in audio software technology," said Jim Cooper, MOTU Director of Marketing. "We are thrilled to bring Digital Performer's leading role of exceptional performance and innovation to Windows-based recording artists, producers, engineers, remixers, composers and anyone looking for advanced desktop music and audio production."

DP8 will operate in 32-bit or 64-bit mode on Mac OS X and Windows 7. On Windows, it will support VST plug-ins and Rewire.MOTU demonstrated DP8 running onHP Z Workstations and HP EliteBook Mobile Workstations provided by Hewlett-Packard.

Other new DP8 features

Punch Guard™ records an extra four seconds of audio before and after record passes, allowing users to edge-edit in/out points to "uncover" audio material accidentally cut off during recording. DP8's new video engine allows full-screen viewing of full 720 or 1080 HD video clips on a primary or secondary computer monitor, or on a conventional HDMI or SDI video monitor connected to a MOTU video interface such as the HD Express or HDX-SDI.

Digital Performer's Themes allow users to change the entire look of the software with one click. DP8 adds 14 new themes, including "Hi-Fi", "Arctic", and "None More Black".

MOTU demonstrated 15 new plug-ins to be included with DP8, including two new classic guitar amp models, a bass cabinet model, several classic guitar pedals, modeled analog delay, a multi-band dynamic equalizer, a de-esser, the Subkick™ kick drum enhancer, and Springamabob™, a modeled vintage spring reverb processor.

Digital Performer 8 will ship Spring, 2012. Pricing is TBA.

You're only partly crazy. The .mov has not gone through through youtube compression and was recorded with an iPhone
I wasn't at all interested in new guitar effects as MOTU recently added a bunch of that kind of stuff but seeing these new plugs actually got me quite excited.
But the new effect I'm looking forward to the most is the Dynamic EQ... MOTU's Masterworks EQ is my go-to EQ and the dynamic eq looks to be a great addition to that...

I used DP7 for a bit over a year. Since all of my mac stuff got stolen, because its so highly sought after, I was determined to stay on DP7, and ran it successfully on a hackintosh for a while until I gathered enough funds again to rebuild my starter studio. I got frustrated when my hackintosh broke for the 10th time though, so I ditched the platform and went back to Windows, and began using Reaper 3. I used Reaper 3 for a year as well, and I just recently stopped using it after 4 came out. I really loved Reaper, but some things just drove me nuts. So I bought Studio One Pro V1 when it was deeply discounted. I've been using that for a month now. While I was loving the simplicity and the clean workflow, I've run into some buggy issues with automation and the forums seem to move really slow. I don't know at this point. I really loved DP7 when I had it, and I used to secretly pray it would come to Windows one day, although I knew it would never really happen. I'm starting to save up my pennies again.

I really hope they add floating windows. For plugins and full screen option ()though doesn't seem from the control panel...)... It's one of the best daw just these two things make it feel strange, like not expressing potential...

Hello,

Does DP support midi scrubbing? If so, can one scrub in the piano-roll editor using a modifier key and mouse wipe action?

I used Performer way back and seem to remember midi scrubbing but I'm old and can't trust my memory.

I tried to download the user manual for answers but apparently it's not available to non-registered users.

Thanks

I was just wondering.... since MOTU is a small company, which version (Mac or PC) will be the primary product supported....? I'd like to buy the one that's got more priority assigned to it..... Or is it that we buy DP and get both?

I applaud MOTU for going Windows as it opens up more possibilities and might even buy a copy to run if it's not buggy.

I could have swore the guy in the NAMM video said the installer discs will be cross-platform and that both the Mac and Windows versions are identical in function/features/GUI.

I'm excited about this too. Been a DP user since the Performer days. Cool thing about MOTU is you can install the latest and greatest DP and it won't touch or replace your previous versions of DP.

Sounds good! Great news for alot of arrangers out there. I was on MOTU software since the days of my mighty Mac Plus with its huge 512k RAM!!! Only went to PT out of stability issues seven years ago but I think it's time to go back!!!!

They announced DP8 five months ago. Classic Motu.
They will release a version 8.0 with a lot of bugs, then 3 months later a V.7.0.1 fixed.

So lets wait till december or january 2013 to use stable DP8.

Sad but true.

DP7.0 was a great and stable .0 version. And DP7 has gotten a lot of free updates and new functions and improvements all of which have been very stable. The current version (7.24) is rocking.
I feel quite confident that DP8 will follow in the same line. MOTU has been doing a lot of things right since DP7 came out (they were admittedly struggling with DP before v7)

Yes, DP implemented sidechaining a few versions ago.

Bump

Can't wait for MOTU to do their magic on this version! Version 7 was the best and most stable version they ever released - this one can only be another home run.

I imagine a lion's share of the coding is going on w/ the Windoze version since this will be their first foray into the world of PCs.

The new 'Punchguard' feature doesn't really grab me since I already have the habit of having the DAW 'punched in' before and after the take. but one less thing to think about is always good for the workflow when you don't want to have to worry about using the 'technical' side of your brain.
