USB to MADI converter. ASIO driver. DiGiCo

At Last, Simple MADI Connectivity Thanks to DiGiCo’s UB MADI

Until today, MADI connectivity on your desktop or laptop required a format such as PCI or ExpressCard. This involves an inconvenient and time consuming set up operation on a desktop, whilst it is increasingly difficult to find a laptop with the necessary slot. DiGiCo Solutions’ UB MADI eliminates this frustration.

Being launched at the 2012 NAMM show in Anaheim, California, UB MADI allows any computer to instantly connect to MADI via the most standard connector of all, USB 2.0. In fact, over the last decade, you would have been hard pushed to find any desktop or laptop without a USB 2.0 connection.

Once the low latency driver is installed, UB MADI is a simple plug-and-play device, automatically detecting the MADI input format and clock selection. UB MADI then communicates with your preferred PC or Mac as a standard ASIO or Core Audio interface.

This might be awesome for a mobile MADI setup. Depends on pricing and latency at this point though.

So I could probably use this to get my SSL Madi AX working on my Imac then without the PCIE card from SSL? Fingers crossed

If they get it to work reliably and you can choose which 48 inputs of the 64 you record, this is huge!

Hi Antti,
From the press release it seems like it's going to be the first 48 channels oddly enough. But I hope that we can choose channels, when it becomes available. Also it'd be great if it was possible to be able to record all 64 inputs and have fewer outputs. I'll very rarely need all outputs even if that's great for some.

Yeah, i guess it follows the same logic than the stageboxes they have. 48 is a lot of channels, but not having access to the rest can be problematic in some situations. Lets hope they add the option to the finished product.

This has potentially saved me a bundle of cash if it works. A thunderbolt to madi box, well that would be something else!

I wonder if they managed the full 64 channels, if they had chosen FW. But hey, getting the data rate of 48 channels over USB2 is not a big deal. But doing this with liw latency and without sync trouble is a huge challenge. So Digico, this is great! And on their website they say that theres still headroom for performance expansion in the future. So let's see what they give us. Perhaps a virtual MIDI-over-MADI driver? Or an driver that allows aggregating the the internal mac soundcard for listening so the MADI channels? They'll let us know...

Anybody heard something about the price?

I'd wait for the thunderbolt connection. usb2 never was a low latency product.

it uses FPGA, if the driver is well written it may well be low latency, I guess digico knows about FPGA programming.. we'll see.

It looks to be MADI Coaxial (BNC connectors) only... or does it has also MADI Optical (SC type connectors)?... otherwise one needs an SSL Madi Opti-Coax converter for the SSL Alphlinks...

I hope it will run fine.

Seems to be the only possibility to use MADI with my non-Thunderbolt-iMac.

If it *is* only coax then that's a bit of a drag; the SSL optical/coax concerter box is around $650.

Stopped by their booth at NAMM... Here's the details:

currently 48 in/48 out, 24 bit with what they described as extremely low latency. Didn't think to ask what that was as I do concert recording. Basically made to be a replacement for the RME MADIface which they were having difficulties using due to the lack of expresscard ports on most laptops. It is still several months away from shipping, but will probably go in the $1300-$1400 range.

The bottleneck for 48 in and out is USB data rates. One idea that I was pressing them for was to make it configurable to accept the full 64 in if you limit it to 32 out or going the other way- 64 out and 32 in. One would be perfect for recording, the other for virtual sound check things in a live environment.

It is very small- smaller than a deck of cards. Perfect for those that are working on location with MADI based rigs. As Digico is pretty much a live company, this seems like a product that is aimed at those that need to record shows while mixing at FOH. Im sure it would work in a studio, but that didn't seem to be the aim of the product.

Well, they could sell loads to the studio cats if it had both optical and coaxial plus very low latency
