this is a very old thread.

it's well-documented elsewhere that steve massey abandoned the AU porting project, so there will be no AU plug-ins, except for a half-done version of TapeHead - available here for free - smassey.com

Tape Saturation Plug-in

I am running PTLE at home and about to launch my new system. The adc is sure to be an issue, I will be mixing using the complete tool kit with 128 total tracks, all on a brand new Mac Pro soupped up to the MAX w 10 gig of ram...
Have you ever heard of Mellomuse Auto Time Adjuster, A friend just hipped me to it and it is suppose to solve all the adc issudes in PTLE. Check out the demo videos.
Mellowmuse Software

Has anyone ever used the Massey tape saturation plug to master down to 2 track. I don't want to spend $3695 on the HEDD 192, Or $2695 on the brand new AnaMod ATSI right this moment anthough I may in the near future. So i'm looking to buy the best analog tape plug-in for LE.
Digi Reel Tape Suite, Massey,.. Any suggestions?

I've spent a LOT of time with Massey Tapehead and while i think it's a great plugin, I really don't think it works well on the 2-bus - I would definitely not recommend it for this purpose. However I have used it in parallel with great success.

Neither Massey Tape Head nor Digi Reel Tape is a good choice for the master bus.

The only tape saturation plugin that I would put on the master bus is Cranesong Phoenix (TDM only, I'm afraid) and even then it's not always an automatically better choice than mixing without it.

On individual tracks they are a lot more useful, although overuse will quickly kill your mix.

Tape Head is great, I just find it to be too much a lot of the time, even at low settings. Reel Tape is seductive but thins your sound, also too much a lot of the time.

Comparing the HEDD to these is apples and oranges, you buy the HEDD for its excellent conversion, the tape sim is a completely different sound compared to anything but Phoenix (not quite the same as Phoenix, I prefer the HEDD) and you get the tube sims as well which are equally as useful.

Just demo and make your own comparisons- be sure to match volume incl. to the original, and try comparing the cumulative effect of a lot of them on different tracks to each other and to the original making sure volume is matched there too.

I still say McDSP's AC1 is the way to go if you want some kind of saturation plug on the 2buss. If a plugin were ever to be considered "classic", that's the one IMO.

I have the McDSP Analog Channel LE version of the AC-2, which is the "tape emulation" and I use it with Protools LE. It's usually a bit too extreme on the master-2-buss, depending on the material. It's similar to other plugins that work great for "dirtying up" individual tracks.
I would rather just buy an analog 2-track mixdown deck if I was looking for tape characteristics. Actually, I'll probably buy a 1/4" machine in the near future.

IMO the LE version of AC-2 is fairly useless. In fact I've only used the full AC-2 version on a handfull of occasions. The AC1 however is a totally different tool. MUCH more subtle and much more usable in the context of a mix. Just MO.
