So... your Vertigo investment is safe. The new license will include 64-bit and AAX as well. Dirk. PS: I will reply to your questions once or twice daily to follow the rules of the Gearslutz forum for manufacturers, but many questions have been answered already in an earlier thread that is now inactive. You may check HERE and then ask in this new thread, of course.

(i like the ilok for the fact that it's internet free for authorising plugins witch is what most of my comp are) , i mean does futur update and support wiull be still availlable for the vertigo v1 or we will have to instal the new one ? This is the best news of 2011 - and since the year is coming to an end, I'm pretty this IS the best news of 2011. It is the best news not only because it drops iLok, but also because it creates a place where you can many plugs from many brands - and hopefully creating a marketplace for plugins with all the benefits that comes from this, like discounts, special deals and that sort of thing. It reminds me a bit about what Valve did for the PC gamers when they pushed their Steam service. The gamer-slutz out there knows how great Steam is. So I wish the best for Plugin Alliance, because this might be the best news ever for us, plug-ins users. Finally we can get our stuff in a single, reliable, affordable place without the hassles of a (failed) model based on a physical dongle that only punishes the people paying for it. |

Well I'm glad that the ilok option is still there. I know I'm in a minority but as someone who has to set up studio at a moments notice in foreign lands using rented computers I'm all for the physical dongle. Hopefully whatever system is implemented it will have the facility to deauthorise machines temporarily to allow me to use my favourite plugins when not at my own studio.

Now these kind of bundles were exactly what I was thinking of... Still hope the price is considerably lower so I could really afford them. Fingers crossed! As for the Steam parallel... well steam works because of millions of users. Audio has some hundred thousand at most so we'll see how this goes... Anyway now THIS is what I call a quality teaser |

Well, I gotta say, I didn't see this coming. I guess the accountants and statisticians worked out it costs more money to use iLok's services than the cost of losing sales to piracy. I wonder if plugin prices would come down if iLok was completely dropped? |

But I need to do something about the way I communicate. I get misread/misunderstood all the time. No sarcasm ![]() I was actually referring to how Steam can offer really low prices and offers because they sell a lot. I buy all my games from at really low prices 6 months after their release. Also appart from heavily advertised games Steam works for developers because of the daily, holyday etc. deals I'm not saying games are overpriced or sw is overpriced. Development costs a lot so unless you spread that cost over many users the prices will stay high. In my part of the world we have West European prices for almost everything (including sw and games) and especially food while the income is at a 1/4.![]() So my options as a casual gamer is to get the games at discounted prices or to get them from a new web based local shop that sells via SMS brand new games (legal steam or origin etc. keys) by convincing the games developers to open up their market here at 33 or 50% of the normal price. I'm saying that it's hard for a niche market like pro-audio plugins to do this. Only SW company I saw having a price depending on the income per capita was a Canadian CAD engineering developer. I work mainly as an architect and I buy the tools I use including plugins. We could not have afforded the Canadian Road Engineering SW without that policy. For reference for US and Canada + other European countries it was 3000$ but for us it was under 1000. But I really can't see something like this happening in pro audio. So I wait even a year + for some plugins to go on a sale group buy etc. And many many plugins I just don't think about or consider them because I can't afford them even at 33% (Lexicon comes to mind). I even got a couple of SH licenses... a thing that I'm not really keen on doing...I love to support developers and SH means no extra burden of support but that's it. But for some plugis at 60% discount and no sale in sight it had to happen. ![]() Again I think BX with the Plugin Alliance concept could offer something similar to Steam in terms of support, licensing etc. I welcome that and it entices me a lot, mainly because I have a bit of a fear everytime iLok doesn't load or the licenses aren't seen by plugs. Or the dreadful C/R. ![]() But I won't expect it to make piracy a lesser problem like Steam did considering the niche and the amount of users. It will surely make things easier for us (stories of cracked versions used even if they have licensed ones). I. Actually had to use a NO-cd patch because of some mallicious DRM for a game once.Or when my CD broke etc. Nice isn't it? Again 75% sales in audio don't happen that often and the 50 66% ones are the only ones that I could afford. Also it's not feasible to make sales like that as it will bring the company down. Either you make tons of good but not stellar plugins like some companies and sell them at 20% of the usual price and sell by the shipload or you just fade if you have a high development cycle. Also ther is no multiplayer ![]() But honestly I hope it will be a service that could begin to tackle this problem more appropriately. And they got the non DRM part right I look forward to be a customer ( I yearn for Passeq so the price of this bundle will be crutial to me)....

@DSK (Too long to quote!): Great points you made there! I totally agree about the distinction you made from games (mainstream market) and audio (niche market). It is a very different segment, but I think the business models can be very similar when it comes to packaging and delivering - which is exactly were Steam excels. I know that from a business perspective it is much harder for our (audio) industry to build something like this than it is for the gaming industry, were a single game can launch a distribution plataform - like EA just did recently with Battlefield and Origin. It will be a much harder task for the plugin developers, but I pray that they can pull this one out and Plugin Alliance looks like it is taking the right direction. |

Actually I see the distribution system simlar to Steam would benifit more for large sample packs. No more 100's of gb on your hard, but a server where you can download them based on the project you have now. This problem of storage has made me go towards modelling like AAS or GSi for many sounds. Good responsive and flexible sounds in a few MB not GB But it's all good even for small plugins. It needs repeating : Brainworx is doing something great here! Why should we repeat ourselves only with bad things or just when we complain? |

I really like this approach. It simplifies the authorization of our plugins while allowing multiple machine flexibility. In the future it would be great if you get more companies involved and allow a single installer that installs all plugins we own as well.
