Any news on this guy? Looks like the M80 with an altered frequency response. |

I look forward to trying the M81. Fletcher, let us know what your impressions are! -SD

I know this is off topic, but I remember seeing something around here about a dynamic kick-drum mic that these guys were making. I can't seem to find the thread via the search. I believe there was a pic in an AES 2011 thread? Can anyone from T-funk give any details on the kick drum mic? And if so, provide some details and/or a potential release date & cost? Thanks in advance, Phil |

The M81 will be shipping around NAMM time... couple/tree weeks from now. The M81 has a flatter frequency response than the M80 but retains all the proximity effect properties [minimal] and pickup pattern properties [very tight hyper-cardioid]... I just used it on a snare drum with a drummer who insisted on keeping his hats open too wide and smashing the crap out of them [think "lead H/H"!!]... the M81 was beautiful at minimal hat bleed into the snare mic... I mean like totally manageable!! Because of the flatter frequency response the M81 is being called the "Universal" mic around the office... it really has a plethora of applications - guitars are really a specialty as the M81 [while flatter than the M80] has a more open frequency response than the "usual standard" dynamic mic in that application. The M82 is the kik drum mic... it is slated for release somewhere around June as some final tweeks and tweazes are still being done to it. As for the M-16 mkII... its time had come. There really wasn't anything more that could be done with that amplifier design so it was back to the drawing board -- the AR-51 grew from the next stage of development with that product and was called the AR-51 because the amplifier was that much different from the one in the M-16 mkII. I hope this answers all your questions... if you have more - I'll do my best to address them in a timely manner. Peace

Awesome! Thanks Fletcher. Plan on buying 2 M81's as soon as they are available. Can't wait to hear it on the snare! Will it be available in the UK on the same release date? |

saw em advertised in Tape Op and one on eBay at full price... looking forward to comparing it to the M80. I often find the M80 to be a bit sibilant on some voices and like to cut it a couple dB at 8k and boost a couple dB with a 12k shelf. Looking forward to not having to do that cut on those voices.

Supposed to be a darker flatter m80. I have an m80 and will pick one up at some point. They can be had on eBay. For sure and various others.

I got mine with the AR-51 and I love it! Haven't tried it on guitar yet, but it is smokin on my vocal. Sounds ace on live female vocals too. Possibly the best dynamic vocal mic in my opinion. I'm generally a fan of condensers like the kms105 and ksm9 (personal fav), but this mic is quality-wise in step with those bad boys. Not quite as elegant as those, but much more detailed than any dynamic I've used before. And smooth with excellent GBFB.

Some people think of dynamic mics as the condensers little sisters... probably because they never had a good one with a good preamp.
