Love the new algo. Just did the thing I needed for a small-ish drum room!

CPU usage improvements in VRoom 1.1.0 for 32-bit Win plugins

I just conducted some measurements in Ableton Live 8.2.1 (a 32-bit DAW), running in Windows 7 64-bit on my late 2010 Mac Mini (Core 2 Duo, running Bootcamp):
  • ValhallaRoom 1.0.9, 4 instances of Large Chamber: 39% in Live (20% in Task Manager)
  • ValhallaRoom 1.0.9, 4 instances of Narcissus: 11% in Live (5% in Task Manager)
  • ValhallaRoom 1.1.0, 4 instances of Large Chamber: 20% in Live (10% in Task Manager)
  • ValhallaRoom 1.1.0, 4 instances of Narcissus: 7% in Live (3% in Task Manager)

ValhallaRoom 1.1.0 uses 51% of the CPU as 1.0.9 for the Large Chamber mode, which is the most expensive mode CPU-wise. For the Narcissus mode (the least expensive mode CPU wise), 1.1.0 uses 63% of the CPU compared to 1.0.9.

My guess as to the different amounts of savings with the different modes is that Large Chamber has more stuff under the hood that can be optimized by the use of SSE2 instructions. Narcissus is a simpler mode, and probably has a higher percentage of its operations dedicated to pure delay line operations which can't really be optimized via SSE2.

Either way, ValhallaRoom 1.1.0 uses FAR LESS CPU for the 32-bit Windows VST and RTAS than 1.0.9. The more expensive reverb modes will see around 1/2 the CPU of the older ValhallaRoom releases, while the less expensive modes will see smaller yet significant improvements.

Other users have reported similar CPU savings on their own Windows machines with the 32-bit VST and RTAS.

Excellent. Sounds like a winner.

So far, ValhallaRoom has displaced all other reverbs on any projects I've touched since getting it. I'm just amazed at how rich and dense this thing is.

Excellent new algo. The value on this plug is just ridiculous.
And the ability to cut and paste presets online is brilliant.
What more is there to say.

I just purchased ValhallaRoom (along with ValhallaShimmer & ValhallaUberMod). After weeks of demoing reverb plugins all I can say is ValhallaRoom is simply an incredible sounding reverb at any price I am totally blown away! . . . . at total no brainer

Hey Sean,
Love this plug! Having a bit of a problem, though.
OS 10.7.2 and latest version of Logic in 64 bit mode. My Valhalla room preset selector gets stuck on the screen. It won't work at all. I can change presets with the arrows and the controls on the GUI work. Just not the drop down menu. I believe I was changing presets while the song was playing when it freaked out. It is repeatable.

Are you using a dual monitor setup?

Early Cross affects the stereo image of the early energy, while Late Cross affects the spread in time of the late reverb.

Try sending a signal hard left only, and play with the Early Cross, Late Cross and DEPTH parameters. This will make things clearer.

No missed post. Just that I have a few bug reports about weird behavior with the pop-up menus (used for presets & reverb modes), and they are all coming from dual-monitor users. I'll ask about this at the Juce forum, as this seems to be a Juce issue that is coming up.

I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed this, but these plugins sound amazingly good and are huge value for the money. I thought I'd better mention that. You know, in case others missed it...

I hear the Canucks are out of the play-offs...

Hy Sean!
I wrote you about that weird preset pop-up behaviour too but i have no dual-monitor setup. Unfortunately the behaviour is non-deterministic but happens more than sometimes.

Just tweak it randomly, since I do that I get some great comments about my tracks like:
"You recorded the vocals in a car, how original!"
or "How did you get the drum kit to fit in your bathroom?"

On a more serious note Room comes with a ton of presets but you can always pick some in this thread (Den's are amazing) and just copy/paste them whatever your host, Room's preset manager is just brilliant.

You may be looking in the wrong place. The presets are in the middle/right on the gui. Click to the right of the word preset. Should be a drop down menu.

I'm kind of a purist when it comes to reverb algorithms at this point. I've designed a lot of them, and know about a bunch more. The units you listed are all very distinctive, and have qualities that can't really be emulated with ValhallaRoom:

- EMT250: pretty sparse, short delays, everything modulated
- Lexicon 224: very open algorithms, different from later Lexicons
- Lexicon 480: honestly, I've only heard the Relab LX480, and I wouldn't want to base plugin algorithms on another plugin
- Eventide 2016: same as Lexicon 480, in that I've only heard the plugin which is currently sold by Eventide (and was coded by the original algorithm designer from the 1980's hardware)

Some of the early ValhallaRoom presets were based on listening to impulse responses from older units, and dialing in similar decay times and EQ, but they don't really sound like the older units. A lot of the older reverbs were really grainy, which is something I avoided with most of the ValhallaRoom algorithms, but that sound totally has its place in music. In general, the ValhallaRoom algorithms are considerably different than any of the above units, and are far more complex. I wouldn't say *better*, just different.

I'm not saying *never* with regards to my take on these classic algorithms, just that ValhallaRoom isn't the right vehicle for emulating these units.

Yep, there is a dropdown menu but no presets. And it seems that you can load only 1 preset at the time and can't save it, right? Sean?

Just the possibility of a Valhalla Vintage Verb plugin makes me happy.

I'd be crazy be interested in your take on some of the more classic algos without trying to do 1:1 recreations.

The demo version has preset saving disabled.

You can grab the latest factory presets from

http://www.valhalladsp.com/room/Valh...setsV1_1_0.zip

Unzip the folder, and move the ValhallaRoom folder to

Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Presets/Valhalla DSP, LLC/ (OSX)

My guess is that there is a permissions issue on your computer that prevented the preset folder from being copied to the correct destination during installation. This happens from time to time. I'm presuming you are running OSX, as this is where this issue tends to show up.
