Goldbaby's The Fat Juno 6

Take one classic synthesizer famous for its girth and weight.

Put a modern soon-to-be-classic piece of outboard in the chain as you print it.

Painstakingly edit and shape the sample set for musicality and playability.

The end result: another Goldbaby set created with love and precision.

Demo #5 is what sold me.

Thanks for the mention Silver Sonya!

Glad you guys like it. It certainly is my favorite Goldbaby synth product so far.

The chorus on the Juno-6 is outstanding. It's the main reason this synth got it's own product...

Maybe I'll find a dead Juno-6 and pull out the chorus and get my synth fix-it guy to make a rack unit out of it.

Or maybe I can mod my Juno-6 with some ext inputs...

Man I just bought the Ultra Analog Starlight pack which is doing absolutely nothing for me. I could have put the money towards this instead. Oh well I guess that can be my charity for the week.

From the time I've spent with it so far, it appears he wrote Kontakt scripts to act in place of the Juno arpeggiator. The scripts call on the appropriate samples from the sample bank, and easily read the tempo from your DAW. There aren't tons of arp patches, but the ones he's made work excellently.

There's in fact a lot of Kontakt scripting throughout patches from each category.

It's obviously a meticulous product he's made. Worth every penny and more.

The apr scripts actually comes standard with Kontakt... along with many other useful tools including a huminizing script and unison and portamento script I use quiet often...

I also like the Poly Step sequencer. I used it to seq demo number 5.

So Kontakt version plays a lot better than EXS24 version?

I wouldn't say that. In fact both samplers have their strengths and weakness.

Kontakt definitely has more features and is more "tweak-able". With some great filters!

However I like EXS24s 'fat' button! Plus I like it's unison and it's looping for sustain is smother ( it has eqPower cross fading which can really help).

However both samplers sound almost identical when playing back samples without any of the samplers filters or processing...

A while ago, I did some phase cancellation tests. Without any filters engaged, both samplers sound the same.

EXS24 vs. Kontakt

I've always felt (since going from the Roland S-760) that the anti aliasing filter sounds worse in the EXS than Kontakt. Did you do the test playing the sound at the root key or did you pitch it up/down from the original?

It's an easy test that I could conduct myself, not just right now as I had a few drinks.
(If I remember I'll promise to post an octave +- test review tomorrow.

Jens

PS. Science is science and can't be argued with. So I guess you're right.

No I didn't, only straight forward sample playback. If I remember correctly, I used the Scarbee Rhodes library. I had been convinced Kontakt sounded better, smoother, warmer. So I did the test.

No difference whatsoever.

Free stuff...

By the way... I have also released some free stuff:

The FatJuno-6 Drums and FX - free sample pack.

Here are some free drums and FX created using the Juno-6 and UBK Fatso:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/tgti2j4twhn/TheFatJuno Drums and FX.zip

The Fat H3500 - free multi-sample instruments!

For Kontakt 3 and EXS-24

I just purchased an Eventide H3500. This effects unit is simply amazing! I can see why it has gained legendary status. What I didn't know... until I got one, was that it could actually generate its own sound. Plug in a midi cable and you can play it! The sound is produced by using short delays with feedback to create resonators which give a sound similar to a resonating string.

I have sampled two patches from the H3500 through the UBK Fatso. It was necessary to do 4 round robin layers for each note sampled as the sound changes each time you hit a note. So the result is kind of organic, albeit in a electronic way...

Anyway enough waffling. Hope you enjoy these unusual sampled instruments.. I am! Download it here:

Hmmm, this didn't come out the way I expected at all. At least thought that the root sample would null. If someone could verify, that would be terrific.

Settings - Setup:
Logic 9.1 32-bit on 10.6.2
File used: Delta_Osc1_Fatso_017
EXS set to 0db. Kontakt 3 set to 0db. MIDI notes to vel 127. Didn't even get the original root sample to null. For nulling I used the Gain plugin in Logic for the Kontakt instance. Just to avoid any latency confusion I engaged one on the the EXS24 as well. Without the phase flip
Offlined bounced to 24bit wav .No dither.

The first tone is transposed -2 octaves
2nd -1 octave
3rd root
4th +1 octave
5th +2 octaves

What makes me think I might be right, and the test is not flawed is that the sound changes when switching the HQI setting in Kontakt. To me that "proves" that something is going on inside the playback engine.
Again I could wrong. Well there's really no right or wrong as someone might prefer the sound of either player, my test (at least for now) just show they sound different.

Please burst my bubble
/Jens

Am I right in thinking the HQI defaults to the 'perfect' setting when you bounce?

Hmmm, I don't know. The test don't show that. I mean if that were the case they would sound the same... I'm gonna print it again. If it sounds the same, which I really hope, otherwise something is terrible wrong with my setup

Here's the second part of the test. Same everything. It doesn't null. Almost does, except from the very initial attack. So I'd say it Nulls to 99%. Perhaps cancels out is a better choice of words here?

At least it show that the EXS and Kontakt are not created equally.

BTW, I'm aware of the setting you're referring to. Guess mine is set to Standard or High. Will change it to Perfect for future off line bounces.

Tui, No filters engaged. Do you mind doing your test again, and perhaps try the octave thing and see if you get different results then?
