Pitch Primer for iPhone

Hello there,

Sibelius Academy, one of the biggest and most respected European music universities has helped two devoted software developers and professional musicians to finalize their Pitch Primer software for iPhone. To see it on YouTube, click here.

The software is about learning to hear pitch purity more accurately, to improve playing in tune and for analysis purposes. Pitch Primer's features are the following:

PITCH PRIMER'S FIVE BASIC MODES
  1. Standby – Tuning mode.
  2. Record – Records audio, enabling the user to analyze it in real time.
  3. Playback – Replays audio just as it was recorded.
  4. Retune – Replays audio retuned pure to desired temperament, enabling the user to hear how the audio would sound in tune.
  5. Analysis – It is possible to analyze recorded takes, scroll back and forth inside them, zoom in and out to examine the most interesting parts precisely and accurately
ADDITIONAL FEATURES
  • Six different temperaments to choose from: (Equal temperament, Just intonation, Pythagorean tuning, Meantone 1/4 Meantone 2/7, Meantone 1/3)
  • Scales: Chromatic scale, Major scale, Minor scale, Major triad, Minor triad
  • A Hz: Free frequency calibration (default 440)
  • Themes: Five visually appealing skins to choose from (Classic, Minimal, Zen, Rock, Gothic)
  • Adjustable zoom
  • Adjustable recording timeout
  • History viewable by scrolling
  • Histogram: Analyze the whole take - which notes were sharp, which were flat, which were pure and how much each was played
  • Volume graph display (Optional)
  • Exercises recorded: Keep, delete, rename and analyze
Pitch Primer is designed especially for woodwind and brass instruments, but instruments such as strings, vocals and others can reap the benefits as well. Currently available in US, Australia and Finland App Stores.

All comments and questions are more than welcome, please take a look and tell what you think of Pitch Primer.

Yep I think it would be reasonable if we would have the same introductory price for a while when released in a new area, I'll try to keep that in mind.

Hello Jaakko,

Yes, very useful app indeed. I purchased one for myself and another for my wife. I've only used it for a few minutes but I already have a few comments.
- Any way to add the octave indicator for each pitch; C, c, c", c"", or subscript numerals? If this were present in the main display and also in the histogram it would make analysis more useful, especially as obviously many players have different intonation issues depending on the octave.
- Could the pitch selection for concert 'A' be made to persist so that one doesn't need to change it to, say 415, with every launch? I generally play at that pitch and it would be nice not to have to reset it each time I open the app.
- Does the 'root' selector in the options panel refer to the first degree of the scale using unequal temperaments? Such as whether you are basing your 1/4 comma meantone on 'A' or 'C'? Also, that selector seems a bit difficult to dial in as compared to the one for selecting the actual temperament itself.
- Any possibility for adding custom user-defined temperaments? This would be highly useful for most 'early music' players who play in Valotti one day and Werkmeister III the next.
- Any possibility for adding a kind of 'display damping slider' such that the user could adjust how much micro-fluctuation in pitch will cause the needle to move in standby mode?
- I've noticed that the minimum instrument volume needed for getting a good readout is somewhat high. Any possibility to add some kind of 'input boost' button that could be toggled when one wants to use it for, say, clavichord or some other gentle instrument?
- What is the maximum record length for a given clip and could an approximate time scale for this be added to the exercise duration slider in the general preferences area?

Overall, great idea and I look forward to getting more acquainted with it.

Nice work,
Angus

Hi there Angus,

And thanks for your comments on Pitch Primer, it's very valuable to hear ideas on the app as we have just released v1.0. Here are some answer for you:

-We're planning to add octave indicators for each pitch as you requested, it's been under discussion lately
-The pitch selection for concert 'A' is going to be made to persist in the next version
-Question on the 'root' selector: It is the center tone in the circle of fifths
-It is very likely that user-defined temperaments wil be added to next version. What would be the most important temperaments you would need (Valotti, Werkmeister III, others?)
-Display damping slider is a good idea, we'll have to think about it
-The input boosting is not possible with iPhone but preamps and such can be connected to iPhone if needed
-Our view on the record length of clips is that clips have no maximum length. The duration slider will be discussed also
