Inward Connections OPT1A Limiter

Using the legendary SPA690 discrete amp blocks, the Inward Connections OPT1A has the exact same Optocell gain reduction circuitry as the revered TSL-3 Vac-Rac tube limiter in a solid state 500 series format.

Looking forward to seeing these at AES - great looking product, nice to have a 1 channel unit available (lead VOX?!?!).

As a TSL-3 owner, also curious about similarities/differences with the tube unit. Should be interesting!

Anyone spend any time with this one at AES? Thoughts on how it compares to the TSL 3?

Step right up, folks!

Has anyone heard the OPT1A?

Is it the working man's TSL 3?

Surely someone must have heard this thing by now!

1. What's the difference.
2. Can you say how they sound sans tubes?

So Starski, do you like them? Do you use them a lot, or are they just a specialty thing? Do you track with them or just mix.

So far I've used them mostly on mixing lots on 2 bus and they sound great. They have basically been one of the comps in my mastering chain but I think i'll start using them more on other things. I just calibrated my outputs of my digi 192 and since it was so off it was stopping me from using lots of outboard during mixdowns. The meters take a little getting used to especially during tracking of vocals as they sometimes look as if there is no compression and then they hit really hard so you have to find a good sweet spot. I've also got CL1B's and those are mostly what i use during tracking of vocals. I haven't used the Vac Rac so I can't say how they sound in comparison, but as far as i have been told and understand they are exactly the same with different solid state make up gain rather than tube. If you guys got anymore questions etc let me know!

Thanks for the great scoop, Starski! You said that they appear not to be there at all and then hit hard. What do they sound like when they hit hard? Do you lose top end? Lose clarity? Just gets louder?

Can these blow up drum rooms like the VacRac TSL?

Or hold a BV up and airy for rnb vocals like the TSL?

I really want to try these...

Or to put it another way, do these slam with clarity and get bright rather than dark when pushed? Those are the characteristics for which the TSL has gotten it's fame.

Tell you what, if you guys want to send me a couple files I can squash them for you and post them. I can do them at different compression amounts etc. Let me know.

Thanks, that's a great offer, Starski. Unfortunately, I'm traveling right now and will be slammed when I get back, so I wouldn't be able to do that for probably a couple of weeks at least.

TRW, do you have anything useful that you could send to Starski?

In the meantime, Starski, can you just give us your impressions?

The problem is that I haven't used them for any of the purposes that you guys are talking about, I can definitely give it a shot on some stuff that I have as far as background R&B vocals. If TRW has some drum room files I can do those as well. It might be cool if anyone has a TSL-3 to have them run a certain amount of compression and send me the uncompressed file and we could try and listen to the differences? I'm open to whatever.

Sounds like a cool project. Try to run some vocals through 'em.
